We encourage anyone who is interested in this opportunity to apply. We seek dedicated people who believe they have the skills and ambition to succeed at NREL to apply for this role.
Job Description
The researcher will work on a cross-disciplinary team to develop neuromorphic computing capabilities at NREL. Specifically, the researcher will use rare-earth nickelate films deposited by pulsed laser deposition. The rare-earth nickelates’ insulator-metal transition behavior will be harnessed for memristors.
In a separate project, the researcher will work with a team developing photoabsorbers that harness sunlight and CO2 to produce fuels. Specifically, the researcher should draw on a background of photoelectrochemical absorber development. Immediate-term target materials include (Cd,Zn)(Se,Te). The researcher will grow films by RF sputtering and adapt methods developed for polycrystalline CdTe photovoltaics to the CO2 reduction reaction photocathodes. The researcher must characterize the optoelectronic properties using spectrally-resolved photoluminescence, time-resolved photoluminescence, X-ray diffraction, etc.

Basic Qualifications
Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience . Demonstrates complete understanding and wide application of scientific technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
.
Additional Required Qualifications
PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or related field. Excellent laboratory skills including experience with high vacuum deposition chambers, electronic (reflection high-energy electron diffraction, temperature- and illumination-dependent current-voltage, capacitance voltage, and Hall effect), optical (time-resolved photoluminescence, photoluminescence, and ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy), and X-ray instrumentation (single- and poly-crystalline X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence). The candidate should be able to troubleshoot all of these instruments and execute basic repair and maintenance. Computer programming for data acquisition and processing is needed, preferably with Mathematica. Finally, the candidate should have experience working safely in a laboratory environment like NREL’s, which has Environment, Health, & Safety standards that are more rigorous and stringent than typical university settings.
Preferred Qualifications
  • The researcher should have demonstrated room-temperature electrical hysteresis using rare-earth nickelates.
  • A track record of writing multiple successful grant proposals as principal investigator, as well as executing research plans as a principal investigator on technically successful projects.
  • Excellent publication record with breadth and depth of scientific output.
  • Demonstrated adaptability by branching out into different materials systems.
  • The candidate should come with new ideas for research trajectories that could lead to long-term funding.
