Description Summary:

The Engineering Plan Checker performs a full range of examination and checking of building plans for compliance with applicable California Building Codes and other ancillary codes such as the California Plumbing, Mechanical and Electric Codes as well as State Accessibility Codes. Work also involves checking Structural Calculations and standards for conformity to Codes and Engineering principles. Work is reviewed by the Director of Operations to determine general progress, technical competence and adherence to pertinent policies and regulations.

Responsibilities:

· Checks plans, specifications, and calculations on building plans submitted by Engineers based on the Sales Department’s documentation, for compliance with established project criteria.

· Makes independent analysis, when required, to justify the adequacy and safety of questionable designs.

· Answers in-house questions and gives instruction as needed to all in-house Team members regarding building requirements to achieve compliance standards; seeks to solve Engineering issues as necessary.

· Keeps abreast of new building construction methods and materials.

· Coordinates and participates in the plan review process with in-house Engineering Team members.

· Consults and provides support to Engineers, Architects, Contractors, Designers, and others regarding matters such as General Design, Engineering and applicable State Regulations governing building plans; analyzes building designs to ensure basic engineering principles have been achieved.

· Maintains records and documents related to plan review for reference by Engineering Team members.

· Provides Value Engineering evaluations on all Engineering construction documents.

· Maintains written library of all applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations and of approved methods, materials and equipment pertaining to building and construction.

· Ensures that plan checks are processed in an accurate and timely manner.

· Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills/Qualifications:

· Knowledge of pertinent codes and regulations governing building construction including the California Building Code, California Plumbing Code, California Mechanical Code, California Electrical Code, California Accessibility Code as well as the Title 24 and CAL Green Codes.

· Knowledge of building construction practices, methods, and materials.

· Ability to read and interpret building plans and specifications.

· Ability to interpret and apply related codes, ordinances, and laws.

· Ability to analyze and make structural recommendations as needed.

Education, Experience:

· A Bachelor's Degree in Architecture or Structural Engineering or a closely related Design or Engineering field. A Master's degree is highly desirable.

· Four years of increasingly responsible plan check or plan examination experience or four years’ experience in the private sector providing building design or engineering services.

Physical Demands:

This is primarily a sedentary office classification requiring occasional standing in and walking between work areas. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator.

· Possess mobility to work in a standard office and use standard office equipment, including a computer.

· occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information, and occasionally lift and carry reports and records that typically weigh less than 20 pounds.

· Vision to read handwritten and printed material; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups and over the telephone.

· Must be able to enter the Manufacturing Plant adjacent to the Engineering office to inspect and / or observe daily activities of the product being constructed.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $60,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
