Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Reporting to the Department Chair, the Director is responsible for providing strategic direction for the fiscal and operational services for the Department of Kinesiology (KNES). Recently celebrating its 75th anniversary, KNES focuses on the complex role of physical activity in our health and well-being throughout life. Its undergraduate major is one of the 10 largest at UMD, with 774 students, as well as 15 Master’s and 50 Doctoral Degree students that specialize in one of the following areas: Cognitive Motor Neuroscience, Physical Cultural Studies, and Exercise Physiology. There are ~15 Tenure Track and ~13 Professional Track faculty members. The department of KNES has an annual budget of approximately $33M in state, foundation, research, and entrepreneurial funds.

The incumbent oversees and provides fiscal analysis on all department financial accounts including state, federal, sponsored project, and foundation accounts; manages the fiscal and administrative operations; acts as a liaison to the School of Public Health and to campus administrative entities such as human resources, procurement and academic affairs; and working with the department chair, the director ensures the department complies with all federal, state and university policies and contractual obligations.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, accounting or other related field.

Experience:
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in higher education administration, including research administration, finance, accounting, contract or grant administration and 3-5 years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience working with diverse student, faculty and staff populations.
  • Demonstrated experience in building and managing state and entrepreneurial budgets.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong knowledge base of higher education principles, policies and practices as they apply to fiscal management, knowledge of federal and state policies, and accounting principles.
  • Ability to take an initiative on projects, analyze situations and present creative solutions, coordinate on an array of projects, work with difficult people, effectively supervise and lead teams, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated diplomacy and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to prepare and analyze complex spreadsheets and reports using Microsoft Office, G-Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and financial accounting systems (including BA4).
