Roadway Inspector - Culpeper, VA
Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering, PLLC (ICE) is actively seeking a Roadway Inspector to join our Construction Engineering & Inspection (CEI) team support various transportation projects with the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Transportation This position will work out of the Culpeper District but will cover other areas as needed.
The Inspector is responsible for the monitoring daily activities of asphalt, concrete, and earthwork for conformance of client/contractor work on various projects to ensure materials meet specifications. Position will perform engineering inspections activities such as construction observation and field sampling of asphalt, concrete, and earthwork for construction application. The inspector will record daily notes for engineering staff. This position requires the inspector apply state and federal safety, environmental, and EEO/DB guidelines and regulations related to transportation construction. Inspection duties will not be limited to roadway and may include, bridge, utility, storm drainage, and streetscapes. Experience on VDOT construction projects is a plus.
Position Responsibilities
  • Ensure all materials, procedures and safety rules comply with the latest VDOT standards.
  • Sample and test construction materials to ensure they meet quality requirements of the project specifications.
  • Material sampling of concrete, asphalt, earthwork, and aggregates.
  • Interact and communicate effectively with colleagues and client representatives.
  • Attend meetings and interact with client and third-party personnel.
  • Must use diplomacy in difficult and stressful situations.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • HS diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associates or BS Degree in Civil Engineering or Survey preferred.
  • 3 or more years of relevant experience in materials, standards, and specifications related to VDOT projects and facilities required.
  • Must complete the following safety courses within 6 months of hire: OSHA 10, Work Zone Traffic Control, Personal Fall Arrest Systems: Fall Protection, and Confined Space Entry & Self Rescue- Competent Person.
  • Must complete the following Core Construction Inspection Courses within 6 months of hire: Plan Reading and Construction Math, Surveying for Inspectors, Documentation and Recordkeeping, Roadway Construction & Drainage, Structures & Bridge, and SiteManager.
  • Must have math calculation skills, MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) experience.
  • Strong written and communication skills required.
  • Current driver’s license with safe 3-year driving record is required.
  • Must be a US Resident or Greencard Holder. (Visa sponsorship is not available)

Physical Demands
This position requires minimal lifting of up to 50 pounds sometimes on a frequent basis. The inspector must be able to travel and tour work sites under adverse environmental conditions not limited to loud noise levels, high dust and dirt, and extreme temperature. The inspector must be able to visually examine construction materials and finished structures. The inspector must be able to work in various types of weather and field conditions, including heights, uneven terrain, highway traffic, hazards of highway construction sites and heavy equipment.
Expected Hours of Work
This position will be a full-time position that may require travel, extended work hours and night and weekend work. Inspectors will be eligible for preapproved overtime at time and a half.
