Providence is seeking an Principal IS Program Manager:

The Principal Program Manager is responsible for advising, consulting, and managing a number of complex projects under a common objective at PSJH under a single program (or across several programs). The Program Manager is assigned to programs with the highest complexity and broadest breadth - typically at the enterprise-level. While operating much more independently, this position works collaboratively with business/facility operational leadership, intake and governance teams, as well as IS groups required to deploy IS services and technology. The Principal Program Manager is the primary point of contact between business/facility executive leadership and the resource managers of all IS teams and is responsible for engaging executive leadership and communicating the progress of the program. This position will facilitate between executive leadership, resource managers of all IS teams, project management and consulting resources, and will be responsible for engaging executive leadership and communicating status of the program. The Principal Program Manager is accountable for working with and facilitating processes to accomplish complex program objectives, managing change and resolving issues that span across project teams and departments by planning, organizing, directing, and supervising program activities in a cost-effective and productive manner to achieve customer satisfaction. This position relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals on complex issues where analyses of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variables.

To ensure the success of their program(s), Principal Program Managers work collaboratively with multiple members of the project team(s)- including directors in organizational development, IS operations, informatics, project intake, growth & expansion, healthcare intelligence, integration, applications, and IT infrastructure. The Principal Program Manager may oversee teams of up to 25-100 caregivers.

The Principal Program Manager ensures projects related to the program are planned and executed in a manner that supports the PSJH Mission, and supports integration and collaboration across the health system while meeting the organizational objectives.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • In this role, the Principal Program Manager is responsible for advising, consulting, and managing a number of complex projects under a common objective at PSJH under a single program (or across several programs) designed to support PSJH to achieve strategic goals and initiatives - including but not limited to - IS operations, informatics, project intake, growth & expansion, healthcare intelligence, integration, applications, and IT infrastructure. While operating much more independently, this position works collaboratively with business/facility operational leadership, intake and governance teams, as well as IS groups required to deploy IS services and technology. Typical programs assigned to a Principle Program Manager will span across several of these operational pillars and functional areas and will require collaboration and coordination with other programs.
  • Strategic Functions:
  • Develop projects within a program in alignment with the organization’s strategic plans and objectives with little/no oversight from PPMO leadership.
  • Influences decisions in partnership with program leadership in order to ensure work toward common objectives.
  • Proactively informs and influences others in order to maintain the balance required between business needs; project partner strategy and standards; and financial requirements and budgets with little/no direction from PPMO leadership.
  • Facilitates strategic planning with internal customers for deployment of information technologies and/or major services and products related to new growth and expansion efforts with little/no direction from PPMO leadership.
  • Management Functions:
  • Proactively and independently manages client expectations for timelines and deliverables throughout the project/program life-cycle with little/no intervention from PPMO leadership.
  • Develop and gain sponsor approval for project delivery dates.
  • Manage portfolio programs with very high complexity, strategic priority and/or visibility, system and/or regional priority - typically at an enterprise level.
  • Engages and organizes the assignment of activities of multi-functional, large-scale teams, as well as the project estimates, task dependencies and schedule.
  • Scope, risk and issue management, including documenting, communicating and facilitating resolutions or mitigation plans with little/no direction from PPMO leadership.
  • Proactively and independently develops, initiates and manages a communication plan, including regular program status reports.
  • Manages stakeholders and multiple project teams in the context of a single or multiple program(s) with little/no intervention from PPMO leadership.
  • Acts as a coach and mentor to others, especially (but not limited to) other project management staff, leaders, project leads, and customers.
  • Operational Functions:
  • Pro-actively and independently develops root cause analyses and process improvement plans.
  • Maintains all program artifacts and sets the standards for other program/project management resources on the program(s).
  • Prepares and delivers presentations to senior leadership, management and stakeholders with little/no support or intervention from PPMO leadership.

Job Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Master skill-level and expertise with Project Management methodology based upon project management principles, including experience implementing and facilitating complex decision-making structures among multiple executive stakeholders with varied interests and priorities.
  • Planning: Master level skills in strategic & tactical planning and program management- with demonstrated ability to quickly understand and align with an organization, its structure, and priorities. Ability to take initiative, prioritize work, manage time and respond effectively to a rapidly changing environment and teach others.
  • Judgment and Problem-Solving: Demonstrated superior judgment, problem solving, and cognitive skills with the ability to understand business or clinical strategies and plans, and their relationship to organizational strategies and teach others. Ability to analyze and report on foreseeable future implications of current decisions.
  • Leadership: Advanced leadership skills, with the ability to successfully serve as a coach and mentor to others with demonstrated ability to inform and influence senior leadership, management and individuals in various parts of the organization to work toward successful outcomes. Exercising sound political and environmental judgment as appropriate to support successful project implementation with excellent skills related to group motivation, discipline, and diplomacy.
  • Communication: Executive-level written and oral communication that is excellent in the areas of timeliness, accuracy, professionalism (both interpersonally and technical) with demonstrated experience as a speaker in a professional presentation environment, such as conferences and association meetings.
  • Management: Demonstrated success independently managing project managers, project portfolios and/or multiple projects and teams simultaneously, assessing and mitigating risks through risk planning, managing the process of design, development, integration and/or implementation of software products, equipment, and facilities.
  • Ability to utilize special equipment such as telephone and personal computer equipment; software including business applications, electronic medical record, practice management, financial management, project management and reporting. PC peripherals and other office or AV equipment such as digital projectors, fax, scanner, copier and others.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree - Or equivalent educ/experience.
  • 8 years Information Services/Information Technology and/or Healthcare Industry experience.
  • 8 years in the project / program management field.
  • 1 year PPMO portfolio experience (e.g., EMR, Business Applications, M&A, Infrastructure, etc.).
  • Experience with vendor/contract management and negotiations.
  • Development and execution experience with business development, marketing, communications, financial planning, and benchmarks/metrics in support of improved quality and process design.
