GENERAL DESCRIPTION


Bull City United is a violence prevention program of the Durham County Community Intervention and Support Services Department. Bull City United uses the Chicago Project for Violence Prevention’s evidence-based Cure Violence program, a cutting-edge gun violence prevention model that aims to reduce and prevent shootings by using public health strategies. The Outreach Worker works individually and as a team to prevent neighborhood shootings and killings. Outreach Workers provide conflict mediation services and connect violence-affected and involved individuals to necessary services and supports.


RESPONSIBILITIES
:


  • Identify and form relationships with individuals who are at high risk of involvement in shootings and killings.
  • Recruit and maintain a minimum a caseload of 15-20 individuals who engage in high-risk activity, are gang involved or a former gang member, and develop and implement a personalized risk reduction plan with each participant.
  • Provide linking and support for individuals to enhance their assistance and use of opportunities and programs in the community (job programs, GED, drug treatment, and mentoring).
  • Transport individuals on an as-needed basis to connect them to services and resources.
  • Work as a member of the Bull City United team to ensure that shootings are reduced.
  • Conduct outreach to the community (individually and as a team member) to build strong relationships with youth, residents, businesses, and community groups.
  • Work with community partners and the rest of the Bull City United team to identify and defuse “hot spots” for shootings and violence.
  • Assist with organizing responses to shootings and increasing visibility when shootings/killings take place.
  • Help in the efforts to prevent all potential retaliatory shootings.
  • Collaborate with Violence Interrupters to identify causes of shootings/killings to assist in mediating situations and preventing retaliation between individuals and groups and provide documentation.
  • Report to the management team members and keep them informed of all relevant community activities.
  • Document all work as directed by the Bull City United supervisor and program manager.


KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


  • An in-depth knowledge of the focus areas and surrounding affected neighborhoods.
  • Prior experience with high-risk street activity.
  • Basic Microsoft Office Suite experience.
  • Ability to perform accurate and timely documentation of client service delivery.
  • Ability to work effectively with high risk and gang involved youth/young adults and their families.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with school, criminal justice, and other program personnel.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and demonstrate good judgement in areas of responsibility.
  • Well known and credible to the community.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule that includes late evenings, weekends, and holidays, and may shift seasonally.


REQUIREMENTS:


Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and six months of work experience related to the assigned program.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:


Requires a North Carolina valid driver’s license and three years acceptable driving record, and reliable transportation.

Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time.
