SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, performs skilled duties related to the installation, operation, maintenance,
repair, and reassembly of hydroelectric generation equipment and large stationary diesel generating units
for the Operations area of the Electric Division.

Responsible for tools, equipment, property, and the safety of others. The Journeyman Mechanic must
perform his/her duties in a manner that reflects positively on the City, KPU, and the Division.

Positions within this classification may be assigned to work at the remote Swan Lake hydroelectric
generating station.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or
may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and
changing business practices.

1. Inspects, adjusts, maintains, repairs, and installs mechanical equipment and systems and structural
features located at the hydroelectric and diesel electric power plants, switchyards, and associated
water control structures, dams, penstocks, intakes, weirs, and tunnels.

2. Operates, maintains, and repairs large stationary diesel generating units including fuel tanks, transfer
pumps and nozzles, fuel and lube oil filtering and testing.

3. Operates, maintains, and repairs hydroelectric turbine generating equipment including intake gates,
control and relief valves, penstocks, and all associated equipment.

4. Inspects and maintains roads, culverts, bridges, and drains; performs construction and maintenance
duties on KPU buildings as required.

5. Performs preventative maintenance; keeps powerhouse maintenance records and logs accurate and up
to date.

6. Performs scheduled and emergency repairs and overhauls on pumps, compressors, valves, hydraulic
cylinders, heat exchangers, and hoisting equipment.

7. Performs manual startup of hydroelectric and diesel generators for emergency operations; tests new
and repaired equipment.

8. Performs fuel oil transfers including valving, testing, gauging and spill prevention; inspects,
maintains, and repairs fuel transfer and storage equipment, including tanks, valves, piping, and spill
response supplies.

9. Performs welding, cutting, and fabrication of aluminum and steel; repairs, fabricates, or alters
equipment components.

10. Drives trucks and operates heavy equipment as assigned.
11. Keeps records of tools, parts, and equipment.
12. May assist a Journeyman Wireman/Electrician.
13. May inspect, maintain, and perform minor dam repairs.
14. Performs related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a
short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of:
The operation and maintenance of large stationary diesel and hydroelectric generating units.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Electrical components of turbines and generators, including both AC and DC circuits.
Arc and gas welding equipment and methods.
Flame cutting.
Machine operation, including lathe, drill press, and shaper.
Plumbing and valves.
Hydraulic systems.
Carpentry equipment and methods; concrete forming and repair.

Ability to:
Troubleshoot and repair diesel generators and their related systems.
Troubleshoot and repair hydroelectric generators and related equipment.
Operate hand and power tools with skill.
Operate heavy equipment.
Read and understand blueprints, schematics, and other diagrams.
Use precision measuring instruments and perform calibration and testing.
Keep accurate records.
Assist a Journeyman Wireman/Electrician.
Operate small watercraft.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely
provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities
would be:

Education/Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade with two years of mechanic training.

Experience:
Three years of responsible mechanic experience related to area of assignment. Experience
with hydroelectric turbines and diesel generators is highly desirable.

License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid Commercial Drivers License.

Possession of a valid First Aid card.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the

Environment: Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor setting with occasional public contact
and travel from site to site; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or
uneven surfaces and rough terrain; work in confined spaces; exposure to all types of weather and
temperature conditions, electrical energy, and high voltage; occasionally works in remote settings;
subject to callout at irregular hours.

In addition to the above, positions assigned to the Swan Lake hydroelectric generating station live and
work in a remote setting with little to no public contact.

Physical: Incumbents require sufficient mobility to perform heavy, moderate, or light lifting; walk,
stand, or sit for prolonged periods of time; bend, stoop, kneel and crawl; and operate motorized
equipment and vehicles, including small boats; verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
