Job Summary:

The Department of Soil Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is seeking applications for an Academic Advising Manager for our Environmental Sciences B.S. major and our Environmental Remediation Management (ERM) Professional Master's program. This position will provide a comprehensive range of educational services and curricular advising in one-on-one organized group settings including new student orientation, academic and career advising, and oversight of academic progress toward a degree This position will attend, record, and organize all program meetings for the Environmental Sciences major and ERM program. They will provide both program chairs with current student and program statistics including program assessment and reviews including working with appropriate academic offices to maintain course guide and messaging. This position will help lead the programs to promote both of them that includes marketing, recruitment, and attend professional trade conferences with the goal of growing the Environmental Sciences major and ERM Master's program.



Responsibilities:
Engages students in decision making processes and promotes appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters, such as course selection and degree requirements. Maintains appropriate confidentiality, updates student advising records, and contributes to the development of academic advising related programming. Works to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. Supervises unit staff and/or manages an advising services portfolio and strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.
  • 10% Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
  • 40% Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
  • 10% Develops and implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
  • 5% Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
  • 10% Supervises unit staff and/or plans, organizes, allocates resources, assesses performance, and leads the operational activities of a function within the advising or academic services portfolio, such as program management and/or curriculum management
  • 5% Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
  • 10% Proactively engages students as needed
  • 5% Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college
  • 5% Provide any educational or other assistance to the Department of Soil Science where deemed fit.

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree

Graduate degree preferred in education, environmental science, physical science, or related degree.



Qualifications:
  • Two years of experience in an academic setting at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Experience in environmental and physical sciences preferably within a school of agriculture or life sciences.
  • Experience in education and/or undergraduate services and advising at the collegiate and/or vocational level.
  • Enthusiastic interest in advising and assisting students in curricular programs, internships, scholarships, and related areas.
  • Familiarity with graduate school programs is a plus.
  • Must have good communication (oral/written), organizational, administrative, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with online and web-based computing formats, outreach, scheduling, and facilitation.

Full Time: 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Minimum $55,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
