 Position Information

Employment at Toro Auxiliary Partners is on an at-will basis and can be terminated by either an employee or Toro Auxiliary Partners at any time with or without cause or advanced notice. Permanent status can neither be obtained nor granted.

About the TTS Advisor Position

The TTS Advisor provides complex, consistent, and accurate student services support to TTS scholars with limited supervision in a high volume and fast-paced environment. Such services include: providing information and advising to current and prospective TTS scholars through academic planning and successful paths to graduation, helping students find solutions for issues they may face, collaborating with relevant constituents to advocate for student needs, informing and referring students to relevant university services and resources, coordinating student success programs, events, and projects of CISE.

The TTS Advisor manages a caseload of TTS scholars and assists in the transition, retention of TTS students through counseling and advisement, workshops, classes, referrals, and other forms of interventions. The TTS Advisor has full professional responsibility for assisting students to resolve any problem(s) that affects their ability to be successful in their educational and career pursuits and make appropriate referrals to campus services and other resources. The TTS Advisor reports to and receives work lead direction from the TTS Project Manager.

Primary Position Responsibilities Student Developmental Counseling/Advising

  • Provide comprehensive advisement, individually and in groups, which include academic, personal, financial aid options, or career-related counseling to a caseload of current TTS scholars. Responsible for entering advising notes after each advising session into the Toro Student Collaborative (TSC).
  • Perform in-depth analysis of student skills, abilities, previous academic performance, and factors contributing to the student's academic progress to assist students in program planning, course advising, major, and career exploration. Complete individualized advising worksheets and maintain detailed and current records on each assigned scholar, including the program of study outline, quarterly academic progress, counseling/advising contacts, referrals, etc.
  • Use professional judgment to develop solutions to individual student problems, of considerable difficulty, which represent integrative approaches comprising appropriate referrals to campus services and other resources. Adjust approaches and techniques in the face of unpredictable responses and rapidly changing circumstances.
  • Implement innovative ways of encouraging and supporting the personal developmental needs of a diverse student population.
  • Support with planning, developing, and conducting retention-related workshops and/or sessions, as required.
  • Maintain regular contact with scholars on caseload and monitor each student's academic progress.
  • Support program activities, such as Pre-Semester Bridge Program, Annual Orientation Session, Graduation Celebration, Information Sessions, Annual Advisor Retreat, Undergraduate Monthly Newsletter, etc.
  • Participate in regular departmental and partner meetings.
Liaison and Campus Involvement

  • Represent the department in appropriate committees.
  • Initiate and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals and groups, including faculty, staff, student organizations, and off-campus community groups.
  • Partake in appropriate professional development activities to remain current on relevant issues pertaining to higher education and the recruitment and retention of low-income and high-risk students.
  • Participate in campus-wide events and programs, which seek to recruit, retain, or encourage the success of low-income and environmentally disadvantaged students. Other Duties as Assigned.
Successful candidates will have an experience that reflects the following:

  • Knowledge of GE, major, and graduation requirements.
  • Knowledge of university policy and procedures regarding all academic concerns.
  • Ability to interpret and use appropriate PeopleSoft admission, registration, advising, financial aid screens.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures governing academic probation, disqualification, academic renewal, and reinstatement.
  • Knowledge of interviewing and counseling skills and the ability to apply these to the counseling session.
  • General knowledge of financial aid processes and policies.
  • Ability to interact and work cooperatively with a diverse student population and staff.
  • General knowledge of individual counseling techniques.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.
  • Proficient in Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Outlook, Zoom, and Teams
Qualifications/Education

  • A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with major responsibility for a professional career or personal counseling.
  • Possess outstanding leadership, organizational, planning, time management, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Skill to use technology tools such as word-processing, databases, and web-based programs that typically underpin and support program efforts and improve the efficiency of systems and processes.
  • Experience with advising and counseling skills. Skills to provide academic, career, and personal advising in a university setting. Listening skills and ability to respond effectively to concerns and problems, including difficult or unpleasant situations.
  • Excellent writing skills to compose and edit correspondence, reports, and published materials.
  • Knowledge of best practices as they relate to transfer programs, services, and delivery systems.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with a diverse population of faculty, students, staff, and the public.
  • Flexible and adaptable to quick turnaround deadlines with short notice
  • Self-motivated to learn new concepts and participate in new projects
  • Enjoys collaborating and working in a team environment
