General Group Counselor Job Description*
General Group Counselor is active, energetic, creative, and caring, and enjoys working with children in a team atmosphere with other counselors and staff. A Senior Counselor is responsible for leading a group of approximately 12-18 campers in a safe, inclusive, positive, enriching, and fun way. A Counselor is responsible for the emotional and
physical safety of individual campers in the group, and for healthy group dynamics. This position leads some activities for their group and travels with their group to activities led by Specialists where this position assists and participates.

The position is for the full eight-week season including events and staff training dates the week before camp starts.

Additional working weeks in June and August can be contracted. This is a seasonal position.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Demonstrated experience working with and leading children.
  • Ability to teach and lead various recreational activities.
  • Desire and ability to supervise, lead, and positively manage campers and work with other staff in a cooperative, team-oriented camp atmosphere.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Possess excellent character, integrity, adaptability, patience, self-control, enthusiasm, and a sense of humor.
  • Pass a MA State run background check including a CORI and SORI.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.

Responsibilities

  • Take primary responsibility for the health, safety, well-being and happiness of campers in group.
  • Take lead in creating a positive and inclusive group environment working with coworkers and superiors.
  • Uphold all policies and philosophies of the Fessenden Day Camp.
  • Follow and uphold all state and local health and safety regulations and guidelines and those set by the Camp.
  • Actively participate in all aspects of the campers’ day and assist specialists at activities.
  • Develop a relationship with each camper in group and learn their strengths, interests, and needs.
  • Encourage respect for self, others, personal property, and camp equipment and facilities.
  • Be part of regular cleaning and checks of group and activity areas and equipment according to health and safety protocols.
  • Set a good example for junior counselor(s), campers, and coworkers in all areas, including health and safety, accountability, organization, punctuality, following the rules, and sportsmanship.
  • Mentor junior counselor(s) and CITs in their development as professionals and leaders in training at camp.
  • Meet/communicate regularly with direct supervisor regarding concerns, updates, challenges, and successes.
  • Communicate with parents about their child when necessary and appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor and Director.

Job Requirements

  • Available 8:30am-4:00pm, Monday – Friday for the entire camp season, June 26-August 18 and to attend all staff training sessions before and during camp season. There may also be at least two days during the camp season you will be required to stay late for special events.
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate health and safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Some high activity which may include dancing, running, swimming, and jumping.
  • Occasional lifting, bending, and climbing stairs.
  • Frequent talking, listening, walking, sitting, and standing.
  • Ability to reasonably participate in all activities in the camper’s day.
  • Possess the visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activity.
  • Subject to be amended at any time.

Job Types: Full-time, Contract, Temporary

Pay: $15.00 - $20.00 per hour
