As part of a multi-disciplinary team, the Social Worker helps students in their development of a healthy sense of well-being and in their ability to maximize their academic achievement. The Social Worker provides direct service to students in the elementary and secondary schools to address mental health concerns. The Social Worker also coordinates with community partners to advocate on students’ behalf, works on behalf of students to provide enhanced access to mental health supports by liaising with community mental health and social service professionals and agencies, provides appropriate referrals for students and families, and supports transitions into service (e.g. hospital), through service and, supports student reentry with a comprehensive plan developed with student and the school team. The Social Worker reports to the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board Mental Health Lead.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work (M.S.W)
  • Registered and in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW)
  • Minimum of three (3) years related experience in the role of a Social Worker in an educational, child welfare, medical/psychiatric or related setting
  • Strong analytical, assessment and intervention skills are required
  • Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member to solve school adjustment, social-emotional and behavioral problems related to mental health of students
  • Training and experience in Cognitive and/or Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is an asset
  • Understand and practice in accordance with federal, provincial, and local laws, statutes, and/or policies that relate to students and families; such as, child protection, special education, attendance, education rights and confidentiality
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have access to a vehicle in order to travel and provide service throughout the district
  • Awareness of a tiered approach to mental health supports for children and youth
  • Knowledge of community resources

As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must provide a Criminal Background Check (CBC) with vulnerable sector screening current within six months of date of hire.
