SRNL seeks an experienced, detail-oriented and highly proficient Technical Writer-Editor to assist researchers, program managers and the communications office in the creation of scientific papers, manuscripts, proposals, requests for information, reports and other scientific or technically driven documents by revising, editing and reviewing content produced by lab staff. The Technical Writer-Editor will work with subject matter experts within SRNL to improve the quality, accuracy and clarity of their writing and provide advice to subject matter experts on improving the quality of written materials.

About the role:
  • Apply substantial technical knowledge of the research and development field, works closely with subject matter experts to assist in the production of a variety of publications, for both technical and non-technical audiences, including:
o Project Proposals
o Technical Highlights
o Research Reports
o Reports
o Scientific/Academic Papers
o White Papers
  • Serve as a resource for authors to improve their technical writing skills to convey complex scientific concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Assure publications are prepared in accordance with format, SRNL branding requirements, and appropriate content specifications.
  • Ensures technical and scientific documents present information clearly and logically for the intended audience.
  • Works with the communications office graphic artist to help authors find best options to visually represent technical concepts and research results.
  • Collaborates with teams and individual researchers, engineers and scientists to develop high-quality/high-impact products on deadline.
  • Applies full understanding and application of grammar and usage principles, theories, and techniques to technical information to facilitate understanding by non-technical audiences.
  • Serves as editor, or co-author for lab publications including journals, concept papers, white papers, proposals, and other documents.
  • Keeps customers and management apprised of the progress/status of products.
  • Schedule and coordinate complex projects. Generate innovative content management and workflow solutions. Establish, in consultation with customers, priorities and scheduled for meeting deadlines.

Basic Education Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required in English, communications, business, or a science, or engineering discipline. 5 years of experience writing/editing for scientific customers/audiences Advanced ability to use Microsoft Office products.

Other Required Qualifications

Proof of complete COVID-19 vaccination or approved exemption authorization will be required for employment at SRNL. Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in English, communications, business, science or engineering discipline, or a Master’s degree in a science, or engineering discipline, and 5 years of experience writing/editing for scientific customers/audiences.

Current DOE security clearance.
