Solid Waste Equipment Mechanic I, II or III Job at City of St. Petersburg

This is skilled to highly skilled work in the Sanitation Department, performing mechanical repair, maintenance and reconditioning of assigned gasoline, compressed natural gas and/or diesel powered automotive, construction and/or maintenance equipment. Examples of work include the inspection, diagnosis, and installation of automotive, mechanical, hydraulic, air conditioning and electrical systems; maintenance of specialized sanitation vehicular apparatus; repair and replacement of fuel lines, and diesel injection components; and servicing of rear axles, multi-speed transmissions and hydraulics. Work includes varying shifts; is primarily road service calls, in-yard repairs, vehicle inspections and vehicle shuttling; and may occasionally be carried out in inclement weather.

Salary: $20.86 - $33.73 Hourly**

**The starting salary and selection into a Solid Waste Equipment Mechanic position, at level I, level II, or level III will depend upon qualifications and experience. The entry level pay for a Mechanic II is $23.48 Hourly and the entry level pay for a Mechanic III is $24.18.

To Qualify

Minimum Qualifications. Applicants Must:

  • Possess a valid high school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Class “B” Commercial Driver License.
  • Have some experience as a general equipment mechanic, with shop experience in the repair, maintenance and reconditioning of gasoline and/or diesel powered automotive, construction or related maintenance equipment.
  • Be able to work five daily shifts, Monday through Friday 11:00 am to 7:30 pm.
  • Possess and maintain a full set of automotive mechanic repair tools.
  • Be able to prepare reports and maintain daily records.
  • Have basic computer skills.
  • Be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Acknowledge this position is designated as Emergency Critical (EC) and if hired into the position, you must be immediately available to the department before, during, and after a declared emergency and/or disaster.
  • At the Solid Waste Equipment Mechanic II level, meet the following qualifications:

o Have some experience as a heavy equipment mechanic at the journeyman level, with considerable experience in the repair, maintenance and reconditioning of a variety of gasoline and/or diesel powered automotive, construction and/or maintenance equipment.

o Be able to at a basic level detect, determine, and repair malfunctions of assigned equipment.

  • At the Solid Waste Equipment Mechanic III level, meet the following qualifications:

o Possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Class “A” Commercial Driver License.

o Have extensive experience as a heavy equipment mechanic at the journeyman level, with considerable experience in the repair, maintenance and reconditioning of a variety of gasoline and/or diesel powered automotive, construction and/or maintenance equipment.

o Be able to effectively detect, determine, and repair malfunctions of assigned equipment.

o Have some supervisory experience.

o Be able to train assigned personnel in the proper maintenance and repair of equipment.
