This is lead work in the collection of refuse. The employee covers sanitation routes throughout the city, ensuring garbage and refuse is collected and disposed. Work is performed under the supervision of the Sanitation Supervisor.

Special Requirements

  • Valid Florida Class B Commercial Driver's License.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Drives various heavy equipment trucks including knuckle booms and dump trucks to assist in refuge pick-up and disposal.
  • Ensures proper operation and minor maintenance of assigned truck, to include hydraulics and other accessories, by way of daily inspections and reports.
  • Reports major operational and maintenance issues to supervisor and fleet maintenance manager.
  • Participates in the activities of the crew, in the loading and hauling of trash and/or garbage as required.
  • Drives truck to dumping location.
  • Gases truck, checks various items such as tires, batteries, oil, water, etc.
  • Cleans truck and performs minor maintenance as needed.
  • Reports unsanitary conditions to Supervisor.
  • Reports safety hazards or needed repairs of equipment to Supervisor.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of the operation of motor driven equipment; knowledge of refuse collection practices’ and ability to perform semi-skilled manual tasks and to follow instructions; ability to operate a knuckle boom and dump truck and packer equipment; ability to lead a crew in an effective manner.

Training and Experience

  • Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is required.
  • Must have two (2) years’ experience in the operation of heavy automotive and construction equipment.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.
