Description

Responsible for planning, promoting, implementing and supporting specialized programs and activities for seniors with disabilities. Coordinates inclusion services for recreation programs and participants. Evaluates, develops and implements plans to support participants with special needs for inclusive involvement in senior programs. Reports to the Health Support Coordinator or designee.

Examples of Duties

Salary Range $21.50 - $33.33

  • Plan schedule and implement variety of recreation programs for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia or other cognitive disorders. May lead recreational programming at times.
  • Evaluate program for participation, effectiveness, community need and budget.
  • Complete patron evaluation, observation, assessment and inclusion plan once inclusion has been requested by family, participant or staff. Communicate plan and any plan updates to all appropriate persons involved in support of participant.
  • Complete necessary paperwork associated with adaptive recreation or inclusion process. Maintain appropriate records and prepare reports related to inclusion services, including ongoing tracking and documentation organization of active inclusion participants.
  • Develop and revise inclusion forms and procedures as needed.
  • Train staff on topics including but not limited to: diversity, behavior management, social-emotional skill development, and other subjects related to inclusion services.
  • Create supplemental materials to aide students in inclusive participation or instructs staff how to create materials.
  • Assist with curriculum development for adaptive recreation programs and arrange for transportation as needed for programs.
  • Assist participants and staff with various activities within existing programs and plan necessary accommodations for daily participation.
  • Purchase supplies required for adaptive recreation or inclusion support within authorized spending limits.
  • Schedule staff for adaptive recreation programs, inclusion services and team meetings.
  • Work with other coordinators, program staff and supervisors to provide successful interactions, good internal customer service, listening and coaching skills.
  • Works to create a safe environment for staff and participants. Assesses environment for risks and corrects non-safe conditions. Report all work-related employee and patrons incidents.
  • Provide assistance to and problem-solves with staff, participants and/or parents regarding inclusion services or support options which includes response to a variety of inquiries and or concerns from participants and the general public.
  • Report cases of suspected abuse to supervisor and contacts Senior and Disabled Services as necessary.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding any medical condition for patrons and follows all rules regarding Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
  • Utilize District registration software to coordinate and manage recreation programming.
  • Coordinate the department's input for the quarterly program guide. Input program information into computer software for program guide. Acts as a liaison with Marketing and Communications department and external contractors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Educaiton and Experience
Associate’s degree in Recreation or related field and at least one (1) year of experience in recreation programming work or a closely related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Required Qualifications
Valid Florida Driver’s License (must remain valid throughout employment)
Current CPR/First Aid Certifications (or must obtain within 30 days of hire)

Skills, Work Environment and Hours

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Considerable knowledge of leisure, social, health and legal needs of individuals with disabilities and safety precautions involved in specialized recreation.
  • Comfort multitasking and handling multiple requests from different individuals and departments
  • Ability to work quickly and in a potentially high-stress environment
  • Considerable knowledge of the concepts and practices to integrate recreation programs for special needs population; training in behavior management, positive behavioral support as well as age appropriate development.
  • Highly organized and capable of creating organizational systems that others easily utilize
  • Ability to communicate and deal effectively with the public and other City employees.
  • Ability to work independently.

Physical Demands
The physical demands involve balancing, climbing, crouching, depth perception, driving, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, hearing, kneeling, lifting, near acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, standing, stooping, talking, and walking. May be required to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Environment
The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environment conditions: the job likely consists of typical office work or administrative work. The employee works in a dynamic environment that requires them to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs.

Work Hours Monday-Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm

City employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as hurricane, or other emergency situations and are expected to perform emergency service duties as assigned.
