The MPO mission is to design, construct, and update the physical plant of BNL to provide facilities where world class research can be performed.

Position Description


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

This Staff Engineering position will report to the Manager of Facilities Project Management within the Modernization Project Office. The major duties and responsibilities associated with this position include:

  • Under direct supervision responsible for supporting the planning of work for major engineering projects and systems with significant scope and complexity.
  • Assists the Project Manager through the entire project lifecycle from conceptualizing, design, estimating/planning, and construction to installation of the project.
  • Under supervision may direct the work of a group of engineers, technicians, contractors, and outside Architects/Engineers for small scopes of work to support a larger project or program.
  • Demonstrates leadership and drive to seek out work and take on greater roles and responsibilities within projects.
  • Basic knowledge of the construction process and experience in the administration of contract deliverables.
  • Familiarity with DOE Order 413 and the various requirements needed to deliver a successful project. Experience with risk management and risk matrix development a plus.
  • Understanding of Earned Value practices and principals is a preferred skill.
  • Ability to use new technology and adapt current software capabilities to improve processes and reduce workload.
  • Comfortable talking to managers or groups of people in a closed setting to convey ideas, requirements or results. Comfortable supporting senior Project Managers in the presentation of materials to senior BNL management.
  • Candidates registered to be a Certified Associate in Project Management (CAMP) through the PMI Institute is preferred.
  • Reports directly to senior level MPO Project Management within the organization.

Position Requirements


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s of Science degree in Engineering required.
  • Must be capable of working with a diverse project team in a fast paced environment with deadlines and deliverables.
  • Must be a self starter and motivated individual who will ask questions and be proactive with their assigned work.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Master's degree in Engineering.
  • Minimum of 1-5 years’ experience in a combination of project management or engineering.
  • Demonstrated project experience in the support and execution of projects greater than $10M.
  • Experience on larger projects may be a combination of, or solely based on design, construction, or transition to operations.
  • Experience meeting with clients, writing, and making presentation to a small group of people.
The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate professional level dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills, as well as years of relevant experience.


Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Hand / eye coordination
  • Moderate lifting (up to 30 lbs)
  • Ability to climb a ladder to work at heights greater than 5 feet.
Other Information:
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License is required
  • Visa sponsorship wil not be offered for this position
  • This is an on-site position eligible for consideration of flexible work arrangement (hybrid telework) at the discretion of the department manager
