The Engineering and Technical Support Group (ETSG) provides engineering and technical support to University research groups and assists the University’s educational mission by enabling technical learning opportunities for students.

Job Summary

Reporting to the DUNE APA Production Manager, the Production Engineer supports the research and teaching missions of the Physical Sciences Division at The University of Chicago by providing dedicated staffing to produce anode plane assemblies (APAs) for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The research engineer performs common tasks independently and assists faculty and senior staff with more complex tasks.

This position has an anticipated start date of June 2023 and is expected to last approximately 3 years. This position may be extended depending on project or grant funding.
Responsibilities
  • Leverages engineering expertise to provide technical and administrative support for research projects.
  • Uses solid understanding of mechanical drawings and/or specifications to procure of parts and materials.
  • Serves as a lead (or resource of knowledge) to the Research Technician(s) and provides direction as needed.
  • Constructs new apparatus and evaluates APAs assembled by the Research Technician(s).
  • Evaluates the performance and reliability of a prototype or production model.
  • Operates and maintains specialized electromechanical equipment.
  • Records technical information on travelers and other quality control documents.
  • Ensures requisite quality of constructed apparatus.
  • Works closely with other University staff (e.g. safety, facilities, IT) as needed.
  • Works safely and in accordance with University safety policies.
  • Assists with installing, set up, and performing research experiments, interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.
  • Has limited authority on construction, installation, operation, maintenance, repair, and development of new, modified, and/or existing systems and/or of electric or electronic components, equipment, systems, etc.
  • Conducts engineering studies and may assign work to technical staff.
  • Analyzes equipment to establish operating data and conduct experimental tests.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience:
Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through < 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications
Education:
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline by start date.
Experience:
  • Experience in planning, directing, and participating in the assembly, installation, maintenance, and/or repair of electromechanical systems.
  • Experience working with scientific apparatus.
Technical Skills or Knowledge:
  • Ability to read and generate technical documentation including mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and technical procedures.
  • Ability to use various CAD software packages to review and query 3d models and 2d drawings of engineering designs.
  • Working knowledge of conventional machining and joining technologies and methods.
  • Working knowledge of machine design and common electromechanical components.
  • Ability to use common mechanics hand tools properly and safely.
  • Excellent electronic soldering skills.

Working Conditions
  • Office setting – 10%.
  • Laboratory setting – 90%.
  • Ability to use material moving equipment (overhead crane, forklift, etc.) properly and safely.
