Position Summary:

The College of Natural Science & Mathematics (CNSM) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is seeking a qualified, independent, forward thinking, individual to work as the Laboratory Supervisor for the Department of Physics.

Duties:

1-35Supervise all Teaching Assistants: responsible for assisting in orientation and on-going training in teaching and assessment methods, equipment use, and experimental methods for all TAs. Responsible for implementation of lab program by TAs. Coordinate between course instructors, TAs, and Office Manager/PPA. Coordinate TA grading of labs and reporting of grades. Assignment and management of TA workloads. Assist and mentor TAs in development of teaching methods. Provide feedback to TAs to improve professional development.Essential
2-25Maintain and develop lab program: revise lab methods, manuals, handouts, etc. Devise and develop lab exercises and assessment methods. Discuss/coordinate lab goals with faculty. Work with UAF rural campuses teaching undergraduate physics courses on lab development and implementation.Essential
3-15Organize and maintain Lab/demo equipment: assemble and disassemble equipment for lab experiments. Store and maintain equipment. Repair majority of equipment problems. Order parts and equipment for lab experiments and demonstrations. Troubleshoot. Maintain property list for inventory. Train others on appropriate use of equipment.Essential
5Dept. Safety Officer: provide safety training for lab exercises and demonstration equipment. Make sure all TAs and undergraduate employees complete required safety training. Coordinate with EHS&RM to perform safety audits of labs and shop. Provide Roof Safety Training for users of the roof. Maintain chemical inventory. Serve as safety officer for outreach events (Science Potpourri).Essential
5Facilitate and perform outreach: supervise loan of demonstration equipment. Coordinate with Society of Physics Students and faculty outreach efforts. Provide demonstrations for visiting and local groups. Volunteer at local events.Essential
5Maintain lab and TA computers: implement and maintain software/hardware configurations. Coordinate with OIT. Troubleshoot. Implement and maintain Noyes computer lab.Essential
5Supervise paper graders: coordinate between graders, faculty, and Office Manager/PPA.Essential
5Teaching: occasionally cover lectures for undergraduate courses as needed by faculty. Teach lab and recitation sessions as needed.Essential
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Requires good communication, organization and teaching skills.
  • Must have strong knowledge of basic physics experiments used in teaching labs for lower division courses and demonstration set-ups used in lectures, and be able to purchase, repair, maintain and use in an instructional mode.
  • Must have a good understanding of laboratory safety practices and regulations, including use and storage of radioactive sources.
  • Must understand the department's computer hardware/software configurations for laboratories and be able to perform initial troubleshooting.
  • Must work well with diverse groups to include the public, students, and faculty, at UAF and at rural campuses, for the purpose of developing, maintaining, and upgrading experiments and to coordinate their use with the associated lecture course as the semester proceeds.

Typical Experience:
Should have both teaching and supervisory experience of at least one year each. Should have experience in repairing electronic and mechanical equipment and test devices. Should have experience in technical writing for the creation, revision and publishing of materials for use in the teaching laboratories, including lab manuals for students and for other materials used in the department's teaching role.

Required Education or Training:

A Bachelors of Science degree in Physics or Applied Physics, or a very well demonstrated
equivalent is required; Masters of Science in Physics preferred. Demonstrated ability to
supervise students and labs, and repair equipment. As the department's resource for proper safety practices, the successful candidate will have appropriate lab safety certification. Driver's license and ability to drive.



Salary Information:

This is a full-time, 10-month (22 pay periods), exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 79, based on education and experience.
