Program Overview: Healing Hearts & Minds (HHM) focuses on preserving, reunifying, and/or stabilizing children and families who are living in homes impacted by parental substance use. HHM serves Atlantic, Cape May, and Ocean County families. HHM provides peer recovery specialists, in-home therapy, and recovery groups to parents and families post SUD treatment. The goal of services is to enhance the well-being of children, parents, and families and improve their functioning by addressing trauma and substance use, teaching self-care and coping skills, and enhancing effective parent-child interactions. HHM peers will also link families to a network of recovery-oriented care providers.

Job Function: The Peer Recovery Specialist will provide short-term, intensive, in-home support, empowerment, motivational enhancement, and guidance to parents with a substance use disorder. The Peer Recovery Specialist will work alongside parents in an effort to support them in their recovery.

What you'll do as a Peer Recovery Specialist

  • Use a non-judgmental approach to meet parents where they are, empower them and assist them in their wellness and recovery plan
  • Use Motivation Interviewing techniques to assist parents in determining their goals
  • Provide community supports and link families to recovery resources
  • Provide in-home sessions with parents, supporting them in maintaining their recovery
  • Work collaboratively with the HHM therapist and community service providers to support a recovery-oriented system of care.
  • Complete documentation consistent with program, agency and federal cross-site evaluation requirements.

What you'll contribute as a Peer

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Lived experience with at least 2 years substance free.
  • The ability to relate well to others and strong communication skills.
  • The ability to exercise independent thinking and good judgment
  • Strong work ethic; comfortable working independently.
  • Experience implementing Motivational Interviewing preferred.
  • Experience working with DCP&P involved families preferred.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license, use of an insured vehicle and an acceptable driving record.
