The City of Everett’s Parks Department is currently accepting applications to fill two (2) vacancies for a Student Day Laborer. The Student Day Laborer will be actively enrolled in an accredited college and maintains a minimum of nine class hours per week. The Student Day Laborer will work no more than 20 hours per week during the academic year and may work during one off semester or quarter per year between academic enrollments provided that notification by the student is provided in writing and the student was employed during the previous quarter or semester. The hours worked during the off semester or quarter shall not be limited to twenty (20) hours per week provided that the total hours worked in the calendar year shall not exceed 1040 hours. It is mandatory that the employee in this position contribute to the Washington State Public Employees Retirement System. This contribution is refundable upon the employees request at the completion of employment. A work permit fee of $8.00 per pay period must also be paid to AFSCME Local No. 113. These positions are not provided with City of Everett benefits.

NATURE OF WORK
Under the direction of the Parks Project Team, support existing and new Parks Capital projects. Duties may include computer aided drafting; hand drafting sketching; presentation of information graphically; BIM modeling; Field work including site inventories, measuring, and documenting, surveying; database management; assist in developing estimates and budgets; preparing public presentations; attending meetings both virtually and in-person; other organizational duties as assigned. Successful candidates will possess excellent communication skills both verbally and graphically; high level of organization and attention to detail; comfortable working in a fast-paced environment; comfortable working in an office setting as well as being outdoors and on construction sites. An interest in public parks, park design and/or urban design, and open space development/preservation is highly desirable.

HOURS:
Up to 20 hours per week , Monday through Friday, up to 1040 hours per calendar year.

SKILL AND ABILITIES
Successful Candidates will demonstrate experience and/or proficiency in the following:
  • Landscape or Environmental Design and/or Planning
  • Strong design presentation skills: hand graphics, digital and verbal
  • Comfortable with the following technology:
    • AutoCAD (preferred) or similar Computer-Aided Design program
    • GIS
    • Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, PowerPoint)
    • Microsoft (Word, Excel, Outlook)
    • Sketch-Up or similar modeling programs
  • Follow verbal and written direction and ask questions as needed to successfully perform assigned duties
  • Outgoing and positive attitude in approaching new tasks and assignments
  • Highly organized and ability to manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines
  • Team player and collaborates well with others
  • Interest in a diverse work environment
Ideal candidates will be currently enrolled in a program focused on: Landscape Architecture; Landscape Design; Urban Design/Planning; Civil Engineering, or Environmental Sciences.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Eighteen years of age or older
  • Actively enrolled in an accredited four year or community college and maintains a minimum of nine (9) class hours per week.
  • Successfully complete a background check.
  • Possess, or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid Washington State driver's license.
