Nursery Manager

JOB TITLE: Nursery Manager, The Children's Center - Bedford Hills Correctional Facility

SCHEDULE: M-F 9a – 5p or 8a – 4p

REPORTS TO: Program Director, Bedford Hills Children's Center

STATUS: Full-time

SALARY: $50,000-$53,000

Working in the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, the Nursery Manager oversees all aspects of the program which includes working closely with the mothers, Department of Corrections & Community Supervision (DOCCS) personnel and staff from Hour Children. The nursery has a maximum capacity of up to 26 babies not exceeding 18 months of age.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee all logistical and practical needs of the Nursery unit - (including the ordering, distribution and management of supplies, diapers, food). Which includes, filling out the necessary requisition orders and keeping track of the weekly inventory. This also entails filling out Purchase Order requests and establishing relationships with DOCCS administration.
  • Responsibilities on the Residential Nursery unit include, but is not limited to updating the Nursery Roster weekly, orientation with the new mothers, manage the day to day issues with the mothers on the unit, which includes collaborating with the unit officers, prepare caregiver assignments as needed
  • Outside trips to Walmart and Target to purchase Nursery supplies as needed. Weekly ordering of supplies online in the business office
  • Liaise with the Facility's medical staff, including the contracted pediatrician, in all matters related to the health of the Nursery infants
  • Serve as a resource for Nursery mothers when issues, challenges or conflicts arise
  • Provide conflict resolution guidance when needed, in collaboration with the Social Work Supervisor
  • Work in collaboration with the Facility Nursery Counselor to coordinate all admissions,

discharges and manage any issues that occur

  • Maintain accurate records of all admissions, discharges, post-release placements and provide information needed for reporting requirements
  • Communicate regularly with Program Director and Facility Administration when any issues arise
  • Schedule and administer seasonal events, including 1st birthday celebrations for the

Infants. Preparation of Special event packets for birthday parties and yearly holiday celebrations on the unit

  • Work in collaboration with Parenting Education Supervisor to plan and execute special enrichment and education programs for Nursery mothers, including the Pre-Natal and Nursery Parenting classes
  • Work with Lactation Consultant to ensure nursing mothers are properly supported and report all mother/baby related issues to the lactation consultant in a timely manner
  • Collaborate with the Infant Care Center Manager in all Nursery management and programming matters and meet with the Infant Care Center manager weekly
  • Participate in staff meetings
  • Comply with all Department of Corrections PREA (Prison R*pe Elimination Act) requirements
  • Comply with all DOCCS Registered Volunteer Requirements, including background checks and policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned

Specifications for Education

BA or BS in Education, Psychology, Sociology, Administration

Specifications for Experience and Training

  • Strong organizational skills
  • Comfortable working in a prison, jail or institutional type setting

Specifications for Physical Requirements

  • Ability to hold and carry babies up to 18 months old. Babies of this age can weigh between 20 and 30 pounds.
