Departmental Overview

The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) is an Organized Research Unit (ORU) of the Berkeley campus reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Research. SSL's primary goal is to foster research in space-related sciences and to provide education for the next generation of space scientists. Research at SSL, led by Berkeley faculty and SSL Senior Fellows, focuses on experiments and observations carried out in space as well as theoretical and basic research.

Responsibilities
Manage MOC personnel and resources for one or more Space Science Lab missions. Plan and oversee operations products development for new SSL missions. Produce and present materials for NASA reviews. Produce and/or update documentation for new and existing SSL missions. During the Science phase, primary responsibility for the health and safety of spacecraft, including anomaly response. Manage MOC support of Integration & Test efforts for new SSL missions. Innovate to automate and improve SSL Operations whenever possible.
Required Qualifications
2+ years experience in spacecraft ground or mission operations. Ability to write well organized documentation. Ability to lead a small, tightly integrated team. Ability to present material in front of large review teams. Must be able to qualify for access to export controlled information.

Education/Training:
Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Post-graduate level course work in related area required.
Preferred Qualifications
Leadership experience working on NASA missions. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and solve hardware and software anomalies under strict time constraints. Experience as a lead in a mission operations position. Familiarity with Linux operating system. Previous experience preparing mission operations deliverables, including completing ops verification and validation activities. Previous experience with multiple types of Mission Operations control software.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $130,000.00 - $175,000.00.
This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits. This position is exempt and paid monthly.
