SALARY: Starting at $42,924 ($3,577 per month, $20.64 per hour) HE-02, BU:10

To support the expansion of services within East Hawaii Health Clinics, the East Hawaii Region has created a Medical Assistant Training Program for candidates who are interested in entering or expanding their career in the medical field. Join us for our spring class, beginning Monday, April 24, 2023!

You will learn how to intake patients and prep them for the provider, assist in office procedures, conduct various specimen collections, perform EKGs, medication administration including injections, remove sutures/staples from a surgical site, and phlebotomy.

Training program participants will start as Entry-Level Nurse Aides as they receive paid, on the job training that will allow them to obtain their certification as a Medical Assistant in summer 2023. Once participants earn their certification, they may be eligible to work in the capacity of a Medical Assistant at one of our clinics.

Opportunities are currently available in the following clinics, and employees must be available for shifts during the corresponding hours of operation:

  • Cardiac Rehab (Hilo): Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30pm
  • 1190 Primary Care Clinic (Hilo): Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30pm
  • 1285 Urgent Care Clinic (Hilo): Monday thru Sunday, 7am-7pm
  • Rural Health Clinic (Keaau): Monday thru Sunday, 7am-7pm

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Measure and accurately record intake and output in the patient’s records
  • Collect stool, urine and sputum specimens for analysis
  • Take temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, height and weight; accurately record in patient’s chart
  • Perform routine treatment procedures as directed by the PRN or licensed personnel
  • Report abnormal and/or sudden changes in a patient’s condition and/or behavior to the nurse
  • Adhere to safety/infection control policies and procedures.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: To qualify, you must meet all the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experiences are credited based on a 40-hour work week.

Knowledge of: Personal hygiene and bodily care.

Ability to: Read, write, speak and understand simple sentences in English; follow oral and written instructions precisely; get along well with others; acquire and demonstrate an attitude of respect toward patients with a variety of disabilities; retain emotional stability despite emotional and physical pressures; develop an appreciation of nursing and medical ethics.

Certification Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers must be obtained within six (6) months of employment. The East Hawaii Region offers BLS Healthcare Provider certification classes in-house for eligible employees.

MEDICAL/PHYSICAL EXAMINATION REQUIREMENT: Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment examination, which includes drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, two-step tuberculosis (TB) screen. The cost for physical examinations, except the cost for drug screening and blood draw for QuantiFERON and Titers, shall be borne by the applicant and not the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.

COVID-19 VACCINATION REQUIREMENT: COVID-19 vaccination is a condition of employment for Hawaii Health Systems Corporation. After receiving a conditional offer of employment, all prospective new HHSC employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. New employees are required to provide confirmation of their full vaccination status by presenting their CDC vaccination card or VAMS Certificate prior to their start date.
