The Rescue Mission is seeking a fulltime Maintenance Mechanic to work on our Main Campus in Syracuse, NY. The Maintenance Mechanic provides a safe operating environment by assisting with maintenance, repair and improvement. This position is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness and safety of the facility and handles customer service requests promptly. The Maintenance Mechanic must continue to develop effective communication/interpersonal skills, must develop organizational/prioritization skills, strive to multi-task, be detail oriented, participate as a team member and have a willingness to learn. This position works first shift (8am - 4:30pm) Monday through Friday and will assist with the rotating emergency on call schedule for the weekends.
Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Assist supervisor by performing a variety of minor & major maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Achieve individual job goals by working independently, within skill level, when directed by the Supervisor.
  • Assist in facility maintenance which may include trash removal, litter pick up, vacuuming, mopping, window washing, to maintain the campus to Rescue Mission standards. Track time when required by grants sources.
  • Care for the grounds which may include raking, sweeping, shoveling, mowing, or other appropriate actions as directed. Monitors snow removal, spreading deicing agents as necessary to maintain safe conditions. Operate and maintain irrigation systems and/or water flowers, shrubs and landscaping as necessary.
  • Assist Team Supervisor with the performance of prescribed preventative maintenance needs on equipment as directed.
  • Documentation and completion all necessary paperwork associated with monthly, quarterly, and yearly preventive maintenance checklists and reports.
  • Assures the availability of necessary equipment and materials by being responsible, when assigned, for their proper pick up and delivery as needed.
  • Works with work request and preventive maintenance system to include completing all necessary paperwork/documentation associated with work order requests.
  • Meets Emergency Needs by serving as an emergency on call maintenance staff person for repairs after normal working hours.
  • Ability to plan, execute, and complete projects from start to finish.
  • Ability to instruct and lead other staff and volunteer groups.
  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Regular and predictable in-person attendance is an essential requirement of the job
  • Promotes a safety-first attitude by setting a positive example and ensuring all employees are following safety policies and procedures
  • Supports the Rescue Mission by agreeing to work within the parameters of the Mission, Vision and Values.

Requirements
  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • One (1) year hands on maintenance experience.
  • Valid NYS driver’s license in compliance with Rescue Mission requirements.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required for certain areas of this job.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions required.
  • Participation with rotating on-call responsibilities is required.
  • Mechanically inclined with great problem-solving skills.
  • Works well independently and with others.
  • Organized with attention to detail.
  • Must comply with CDC guidelines regarding Covid-19, including but not limited to, wearing a mask when working.
  • Must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 as required by the Dept. of Health.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Needed to Perform Effectively in this Position
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to work with or without supervision.
  • Basic knowledge in carpentry, plumbing, and electrical.
  • Ability to understand and carry out job instruction.
  • Ability to operate lawn and snow care equipment, including but not limited to wheelbarrows, shovels, power tools, etc.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and stressful environment.

Pay Rate:
$25 - $28 per hour
