HOURS/DAYS SCHEDULE: TBD: Days, Midday, Evenings and Weekends

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: Deliver professional customer service and relationship building skills to create a welcoming environment at the YMCA. The individual will be responsible for providing a safe, clean, attractive and fun aquatic facility for people of all abilities.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Lifeguard, working as part of the aquatics team, will deliver professional customer service and relationship building skills to create a welcoming environment at the YMCA. The individual will be responsible for providing a safe, clean, attractive and fun aquatic facility for people of all abilities. The incumbent will also exhibit the core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility in all aspects of their work with the YMCA.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintain safety in pool at all times. You will guard the pool using YMCA approved techniques and procedures. You may dismiss any person from the pool because of disruptive behavior
  • Report to work when scheduled and on time. Report all schedule changes to your supervisor immediately.
  • Be dressed in appropriate attire (uniform) and identifiable with a name tag/name posted in pool area at all times.
  • Educate participants to all pool rules and enforce rules as required.
  • Be familiar with and act on all emergency procedures. Follow and enforce all YMCA procedures and policies, including: personnel guidelines, facility access procedures and membership policies.
  • Remain current on all mandatory trainings and attend all required staff meetings.
  • Be tested periodically on CPR, First Aid, and any other applicable safety procedures.
  • Report all accidents and incidents to your supervisor immediately using proper forms.
  • Maintain a clean and safe YMCA. Take initiative to clean up and/or repair areas as noted.
  • Be visible to members at all times-work towards branch membership retention goals.
  • Provide quality customer service at all times.
  • Be knowledgeable and supportive of the YMCA annual support campaign.
  • Communicate participant concerns to your supervisor.
  • Perform chemical checks as indicated.
  • Wear protective gear when handling biohazard materials.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by your supervisor.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, swim, use their hands to grip, handle and feel objects and reach with their arms and legs.
  • The employee will occasionally be required to lift 50-100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities are required for this job. The employee must be able to see close up and at a distance and have clear peripheral vision.
  • Acute hearing skills are required.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to water, wet conditions, cool or very hot temperatures, and direct UV sun rays or outdoor weather conditions (if working at an outdoor pool).
  • The employee may occasionally be exposed to caustic or toxic chemicals.
  • The noise level in the aquatic area is moderate to loud.

INTERPERSONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform and provide excellent customer service skills by exceeding member expectations! Consistently greet every person who enters the YMCA (by name, if known) and recognize all members and guests when they leave.
  • Engage in active listening with members and program participants in order to build relationships, understand individuals goals and interests, and take the initiative to ensure the member has a positive experience.
  • Provide accurate information about membership and programs.
  • Help prospects and members experience the YMCA by introducing them to other staff and members. By creating these interactions, we will demonstrate that the YMCA is a place where we take the time to connect, communicate and engage in respectful and friendly relationships.
  • Develop new opportunities for members to interact with one another. Be a Relationship Builder for the YMCA.
  • Be familiar with the mission statement and core values of the YMCA. Model the core values while working and communicating with other staff members.
  • Always have a friendly, helpful attitude and wear a smile.
  • Actively listen, reflect and respond to customer questions and concerns in a caring manner.
  • When the opportunity presents itself, go above and beyond to resolve the situation immediately.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 16 years of age or older
  • CPR-PR/AED, Oxygen Administration, and Standard First Aid or ability to obtain before hire.
  • American Red Cross/YMCA Lifeguard certification or ability to obtain before hire.
  • High customer relation skills
