Job Title: Lab Technician

Department: Quality

Reports To: Quality Manager

Supervisory Position: No

FLSA Designation: Non-Exempt

General Purpose:

Complete analytical testing of all finished saleable and intermediate products, records data, and reports results to appropriate stakeholders.

Essential Functions:

Responsibilities that are requirements in order to perform the job:

  • Responsible for in process and final specification testing of product and materials
  • Required to operate a variety of testing equipment following strict guidelines and procedures to ensure that product meets customer specifications using PPE when required
  • Maintains testing equipment in a clean and ready-to-use state at all times
  • Communicates test results to operators and supervisors
  • Keeps required production records and log sheets accurate and up to date
  • Required to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, and schedule formats and lab results with little supervision
  • Maintains the integrity and calibration of lab equipment as required
  • Keeps the lab organized, clean, and free from any known hazards
  • Properly collects, stores, and disposes of any hazardous materials related to lab functions
  • Collect relevant data and enters same into the management system
  • Advises Quality Manager of lab results and deviations from specifications

Supportive Functions:

In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of supportive functions based on business needs:

  • Pull additional samples of materials for testing and/or customer requests as directed
  • Take part in an annual physical inventory count as needed

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Job requires the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
  • This position requires the ability to interpret lab results and to effectively present information to other employees of the organization
  • Correctly performs basic math calculations

Education/Experience Guidelines:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related field preferred

Must be able to move freely to and from the lab area, may be required to climb stairs. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee may occasionally lift and move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. On occasion, the employee will be exposed to wet/humid conditions (non-weather), fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather, extreme heat/cold (non-weather), toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, working near moving mechanical parts, working in precarious places, and working with explosives.
