You will be working in coordination with one of the largest libraries in the Federal Government, the National Security Research Center (NSRC). The NSRC is LANL's classified library, containing tens of millions of documents, films, books, and other archival material related to the development, testing, and production of nuclear weapons, dating back to the first days of the Manhattan Project. The NSRC's collections contain a breadth of classified technical information related to physics, chemistry, engineering, material science, intelligence, and national security. We are looking for an individual with a background in handling, storage, transmission, and disposition of electronic and hard copy unclassified and/or classified documents/materials; engaging with special records or archive collections; and performing technical information research and retrieval from physical collections to meet the needs of Laboratory staff.

As an Indexing Specialist, you will conduct historical research using archival documents, manage special records or archive collections and performs basic technical information research and retrieval from the collections to meet the information needs of Laboratory staff and external customers. Duties will include ordering, receiving, indexing, cataloging, preparing, and storing technical information, both published and unpublished, in all formats including electronic, assisting customers, conducting searchers, and providing information. Distributes information to customers following well-established procedures.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Knowledge

For this role, you will need experience in populating indices for small to moderate size collections, experience populating metadata for archival materials. In addition, you must be a demonstrated self-starter with the ability to work independently without direct supervision with strong attention to detail. For this position you will also need to provide tours of the NSRC and provide various presentations to internal and external audiences on the contents of the NSRC and support research activities in the support of internal and external staff members. This position requires strong communication skills including verbally and in writing. For this role you will be required to demonstrate experience contributing and writing for various publications that you have produced.

Customer Relations

You will be required to have experience in customer-focused communication and relations and the ability to work in a team environment. You will also need to have experience interacting with senior managers and providing research support for this audience.

Education/Experience

Position requires a bachelor's degree in a relevant field and 5 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Clearance

Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.

Desired Qualifications:

LANL Familiarity

It would be a plus if you understand the weapons program within LANL, along with experience working with classified material in a classified environment.

Technical Knowledge
  • Demonstrated experience working in a major archival organization, such as the National Archives and Records Administration.
  • Experience in Classified Matter Protection and Control; and Vault Access training.
  • Experience in using LANL's classified network systems, uploading, cataloging, and retrieving documents.
  • Document custodian background and experience and/or records management, document control background and experience.

Active DOE "Q" Clearance

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
