Position Overview:

Astound Broadband Powered by Wave is currently searching for a Headend Technician in Sacramento, CA. This position is responsible for the reception and distribution of off-air, satellite, microwave and tape originated programming to the outside plant utilizing coaxial cable, microwave, and fiber optic transmission technologies. This includes the installation, construction, operation and repair of all equipment associated with the headend and signal distribution network.

The primary position responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Monitor video and audio quality of services delivered on the forward and reverse.
  • Perform daily check of RF levels and Headend alignment.
  • Verify video and audio levels for satellite and stereo processing equipment.
  • Monitor Commercial Insertion equipment for performance as needed.
  • Perform status monitoring of RF and data performance and further report and/or repair discrepancies.
  • Assist the supervisor with work flow, training and quality assurance.
  • Clean, maintain, stock, and secure assigned vehicle and equipment if applicable.
  • Perform other duties as requested by supervisor.
  • Troubleshoot return path issues.
  • Troubleshoot fiber and fiber related issues.
  • Monitor lasers and receivers for headend and hub sites.
  • Assist the NOC and other technical support departments in isolating and repairing video and data services.
  • Ability to adhere to Local, Federal regulations and Company policies
  • Ability to carry, climb and operate extension ladder, (approx. 28 ft high and 75 pounds)
  • Ability to climb towers and operate all safety equipment
  • Ability to differentiate between different sizes and colors of wires
  • Ability to drive Company vehicle in a safe and responsible manner
  • Ability to make cable connections in tight spaces by bending, reaching, twisting
  • Ability to perform job from high places (i.e. towers and roofs)
  • Ability to prioritize and organize effectively
  • Ability to read general system layouts from blue prints and system maps
  • Ability to trouble shoot and splice fiber
  • Ability to use the following hand tools: electric drills, hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work while standing 50 - 70% of the time
  • Ability to work with small components and wires to make cable connections
  • Ability to comply with all Company implemented safety procedures
  • Ability to demonstrate courtesy and patience in customer/vendor relations
  • Ability to work on-call
  • Ability to work late nights for scheduled maintenance windows
  • Troubleshoot return path issues
  • Ability to use test equipment (i.e. spectrum analyzer, Mpeg analyzer , signal level meter and other test equipment
  • Vision ability: close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus

Our ideal candidate will possess:

  • 5 years cable TV experience preferred
  • Working knowledge of CMTS hardware
  • Working knowledge of VOD systems
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics and electronics
  • Knowledge of redesign and measuring voltage wiring: advanced splicing skills bench sweep, and spectrum analyzer
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate appropriate testing equipment (e.g. signal level meters, ohm meters, etc.)
  • Ability to troubleshoot return path issues
  • Ability to maintain FCC records

  • NCTI or SCTE certification preferred

The base salary range in California for this position is $29.44 - $46.34 per hour, plus opportunities for bonus, benefits and commission, if applicable. The base pay range represents the low and high end of the hiring range for this job. Actual pay will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to relevant skills, experience, and capabilities. It is specific to California and may not be applicable to other locations.

  • Headend Technician I - $29.44 - $34.00 per hour
  • Headend Technician II - $28.09 - $43.70 per hour
  • Headend Technician III - $35.00 - $46.34 per hour
