The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for several short term non permanent Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 positions located in Ketchikan!

What you will be doing:
Under general supervision of a biologist, the creel sampling position collects data on the Ketchikan sport fishery by interviewing marine boat anglers to obtain detailed information on fishing effort, species specific catch and harvest rates, and the species composition of their catch. In addition, this position collects adipose-clipped king and coho salmon heads implanted with coded-wire tags, and biological information such as lengths, sex, scale collection, and genetics samples from salmon, halibut, lingcod, sablefish, and rockfish. Training is provided to all technicians; no prior sampling experience is necessary.

  • This position will require working outdoors, often in inclement weather and while sampling on Ketchikan docks. You must be able to lift 40 pounds without difficulty and carry bulky equipment while sampling.

Our organization, mission, and culture:
The mission of the Division of Sport Fish is to protect and improve the state's sport fishery resources. The Division of Sport Fish conducts marine harvest surveys in southeast Alaska for Chinook/coho salmon, halibut, rockfish, and lingcod and fulfills obligations to the Pacific Salmon Treaty and other international fisheries treaties. This position is vital to the data gathering and success of the project which enables the fisheries to be managed effectively.

The working conditions you can expect:
This position is based out of Ketchikan and will be filled from mid-May to mid-September. After an initial training period, the daily work environment includes working at local harbors/boat launches conducting interviews with marine sport anglers and obtaining biological information. The work is done in all weather conditions. A variety of fish species will be encountered, identified, measure, and examined for tags. All data will be entered on user friendly iPads.

  • Familiarity with Alaska sport fisheries, fish species, and sport fish regulations.
  • Ability to work independently in a self-motivated and self-directed manner.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or the equivalent.
OR
Three months as an entry level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 1.
OR
Six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory.

Special Requirements:
Exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals may occur. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Some duties may be restricted for employees under the age of 18 in accordance with State and federal child labor laws. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
"High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required high school diploma or equivalent within three months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
