Extension Instructor - Forest Stewardship Program (Missoula, MT) Job at Montana State University
The Forest Stewardship Program is a part of the MSU Extension Forestry Program, which is housed in the W.A. Franke College of Forestry and Conservation at the University of Montana, Missoula, Montana. The FSP Coordinator is administratively responsible to the Extension Forestry Specialist and is a full-time professional position with Montana State University Extension. This position is grant-funded through an annual grant from the Montana DNRC.
We seek individuals who work professionally and effectively with diverse individuals, foster and maintain effective interpersonal relationships, exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to contribute positively to the academic success of students and the mission of Montana State University.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide overall leadership and management of the forest landowner planning workshop curriculum.
Plan, staff, facilitate and instruct forest stewardship workshops.
Identify, hire, train and supervise stewardship workshop advisors.
Develop, enhance and/or modify curricula as needed. Work with the MSU Extension Forestry Specialist to develop an on-line Forest Stewardship program.
Work with multi-constituent Forest Service, Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, and Natural Resources and Conservation Service representatives.
Develop and manage annual budget.
Record program results into national data base.
Cooperate with MSU Extension agents and specialists, and University system faculty, and natural resources agencies and associations.
Assure compliance with civil rights and affirmative action policies.
Comply with all Extension federal, state, university and grant reporting requirements.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry or closely related field.
Significant practical forestry field experience.
Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with a wide range of interests and constituents.
Experience developing and conducting educational programs.
Demonstrated ability in using computer platforms with general word processing, GIS, graphic design and database applications.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Master’s Degree.
Grant writing experience.
Experience and/or training in team-teaching.
Experience and/or training in management and/or supervision.
Experience working with adult audiences/private landowners.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
This position requires extensive travel across the state of Montana. A state vehicle is available for use. Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points), or have other reliable means of transportation. An estimated 30,000 non-industrial (family) forest landowners that own more than 10 acres of forested land account for 3.5 million acres of productive forest across Montana. The Montana Forest Stewardship Program is in its 32nd year of providing educational workshops that assist landowners in learning about the natural resources on their property. This is accomplished through 4-5 three-day workshops every year that include 2-days of classroom education, a week during which landowners inventorying their forested property and a final classroom day where they develop their management plan with the assistance of stewardship advisors. A well-developed classroom and video curriculum has been developed as a template or this program.
