Position Summary
While working to achieve N3B LLCC objectives, for the assigned areas of responsibility, the Environmental Engineer uses engineering techniques and biosciences to address environmental issues, including efficiency, resource management, and public policy compliance for investigation, monitoring, containment, and remediation of groundwater contamination. The ideal job candidate must have a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and previous experience in groundwater remediation techniques.

This role will support the corrective measures evaluation (CME) and subsequent proposal, design, and implementation of a final remedy for chromium-VI and royal demolitions explosive (RDX) contaminated groundwater. Additionally, this role will participate in any updates to the existing chromium-VI pump-and-treat system.

They will be responsible for supporting the Water Program in oversight of subcontractors’ execution of multi-million dollar subcontracts.

This position reports to the Water Program Director.

This position requires creativity and flexibility to meet new challenges and the expertise to apply appropriate solutions efficiently.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):
  • Provide expert engineering advice regarding all environmentally related activities.
  • In conjunction with subject matter experts, evaluate and optimize water monitoring networks.
  • Manage the design, evaluation, permitting, construction, and operation of groundwater treatment systems, including in-situ and ex-situ.
  • Design and plan construction and restoration of well drilling pads and cuttings pits.
  • Work with integrated project teams to successfully complete assigned projects. Support environmental project reviews.
  • Support DOE and regulatory deliverables for assigned projects.
  • Support development and review of project documents.
  • Manage quality methodologies and utilize quality tools to help drive continuous improvement.
  • Provides input to subcontractor performance evaluations and assessments.
  • Supports oversight of performance within the terms of the subcontract, including periodic field oversight.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental, civil or other related engineering field required. Masters preferred.
  • Professional Engineer licensure.
  • Background in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and water/soil sciences.
  • Experienced using compliance and CAD (computer-aided design) software.
  • Experience in the design, evaluation, permitting, construction, and operation of groundwater treatment, including in-situ and ex-situ systems.
  • Experience in designing, constructing, and restoring well drilling pads and cuttings pits.
  • Skill and ability to perform critical strategic tasks and to interpret broad strategic requirements and develop and execute plans to satisfy them.
  • Ability to have major impact on organizational success and productivity, with extensive latitude for independent judgment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at the highest levels.
  • Can be viewed as an expert within a specialty and as highly competent within the broad discipline, both internally and externally.
  • Level of language skills, mathematical skills, communication skills, reasoning ability and computer skills necessary to perform essential functions of the job.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Civil, or other related engineering field
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience.

Frequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts. Represents organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects.

Works under only general direction. Independently determines and develops approach to solutions. Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives. Contributes to completion of specific programs and projects. Failure to obtain results or erroneous decisions or recommendations would typically result in serious program delays and considerable expenditure of resources.


  • A combination of education and relevant experience wherein the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the position’s duties and responsibilities have been adequately demonstrated is acceptable.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
Normally assigned to perform work in an office environment (~70%), however, oversight of field activities will require field visits (~30%). Electrical hazards and other minor potential hazards normally found in an office environment are anticipated, care would be taken during field visits. Job performance requires adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements of the discipline. Primarily office work, with some fieldwork environments will be encountered.

While working to achieve N3B LLCC objectives, the Oversight Project Manager will ensure all activities and operations are performed in a safe and deliberate manner to include protecting the confidentiality and integrity of Personally Identifiable Information (PII). This role will maintain required safety, security and operational training; assure procedural and regulatory compliance; and make safety, security and quality an integral part of every task; including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security. Ability to obtain a Q level Department of Energy security clearance.
