Responsibilities:

The Energy Engineer (EE) will perform benchmarking and retro-commissioning for operations of existing buildings. The EE works with facilities to implement effective and innovative energy conservation measures and demand-side management strategies in buildings and facilities. The EE also conducts energy assessments and site investigations, interprets engineering documents and drafts technical reports. The EE will provide technical support for project design and implementation, optimize operations, and energy use of systems and equipment to achieve energy savings and optimal equipment operation.

Required Qualifications:
  • Ability to conduct RCx activities, such as auditing, inventorying, baselining, benchmarking, implementation management, and measurement and verification (M&V);
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and principles as well as common HVAC systems and emerging high-performance alternatives;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software;
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of building automation systems (Siemens);
  • Review construction documents and provide recommendations to improve operation, indoor air quality, performance, and energy efficiency;
  • Ability to perform utility billing analysis and trend analysis;
  • Development of energy savings strategies and calculations or whole building calibrated simulations;
  • Review energy savings calculations of others for correctness;
  • Provide written technical and non-technical issue log findings and reports for program compliance and ownership review;
  • Ability to verbally communicate technical and nontechnical information to various stakeholders;
  • Ability to manage time independently and meet schedules and deadlines;
  • Ability to identify high-impact energy conservation measures and manage energy efficiency projects; and
  • Must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator’s license that meets all of GMU’s requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason’s Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/. The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver’s licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP), Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP), and/or Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) preferred.
