Position Summary Information

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s in Student Development, Student Personnel, Higher Education or Counseling, or other related fields.
  • Candidates should have 5-7 years of progressive experience in a college career setting with experience in staff supervision, budget management, employer development, and serving student needs.

  • Demonstrated communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning and program development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of career readiness and NACE Competencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
University College seeks to develop, support and enrich the academic journeys of all Appalachian State University students through a variety of curricular, co-curricular, and student support programs. The Career Development Center within University College empowers students and alumni to select and develop careers consistent with their values, interests, abilities, experiences, and education.

Through effective leadership, the Director of Career Development provides a progressive approach to serving students and all programs housed under the Center through creative programming, effective use of technology, implementation of comprehensive branding and marketing, and development of strong relationships with a wide variety of constituencies including students, faculty, alumni, internship sites, and employers.

The Director is responsible for general program oversight, supervision and professional development of staff, budgetary oversight, assessment, employer development, event planning, and strategic planning for the department. Some travel will be required as well as evening and weekend work at times. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Serve as a member of the leadership team in University College.
  • Work collaboratively within Academic Affairs, specifically the deans, and department chairs to create strong connections and partnerships with faculty and staff to support the work of the Center. Work with all university divisions to ensure an integrated approach to the delivery of career and leadership-related services and programs.
  • Provide leadership across campus to support students’ career preparation and professional aspirations.
  • Develop and continually evaluate a vision for the future of the Center that takes into account changing demographics on campus and trends and developments in the field.
  • Increase and improve internships and other opportunities for career exploration.
  • Maintain and enhance the existing employer relations programs.
  • Manage the operations of the Center for Career Development, and, through the effective use of technology and data, monitoring outcomes including the First Destination Report, which includes information on where Appalachian students “land” post-graduation.
  • Supervise, hire, and train staff members including professional, support, student employees, graduate assistants, and interns.
  • Coordinate campus-wide student employment operations including the Federal Work-Study program.
  • Plan and execute large-scale events including career fairs, networking events, etc.
  • Participate in community, regional, and state meetings to develop partnerships with businesses and industry in order to foster networking opportunities for students, faculty, and staff.
