JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Clinical Dental Assistant provides chairside assistance, clinical/laboratory support, and facilities maintenance for residents and faculty members in the Department of Prosthodontics, Postgraduate Prosthodontics Program.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists operator at the dental chair; arranges instruments, materials, and medications on prepared tray and aids dental operator (dental student/faculty).
  • Provides chairside assistance to faculty and students. Seats and prepares patients for treatment.
  • Clears operating area during procedures by use of suction devices, water sprays, cotton rolls and holders, and by retraction of cheek/tongue.
  • Prepares and/or mixes impression materials.
  • Takes impressions of patient’s teeth for study casts; creates and trims provisional restorations; cleans excess cement following clinical luting procedures.
  • Provides assistance with clinical photographic procedures; Takes diagnostic radiographs including cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) when appropriate.
  • Instructs postgraduate students in the performance and utilization of chairside assistants.
  • Counsels with patients following clinical procedures; explains instructions and directions outlined for treatment by the doctor; teaches oral hygiene strategies.
  • Ensures working area, instruments, and equipment meets OSHA sterilization regulations.
  • Performs preventive equipment maintenance and routine maintenance.
  • Maintains the inventory of supplies and equipment; maintains lab equipment, supplies and lab cases and coordination of cases with outside labs; updates and upgrades emergency crash kits.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
:

EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: One (1) year experience working chairside in a dental practice. Successful completion of ADA accredited dental assistant program. Must maintain certification as a licensed dental assistant in the State of Tennessee. (PROOF OF LICENSURE IS REQUIRED). Dental Assistant National Board Certification (DANB) is preferred. Nitrous Oxide Monitoring and Radiology Certification is preferred.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work efficiently in a clinical setting.
  • Knowledge of correct sequencing of instruments, dental materials, instrument transfer, and operation set up.
  • Understanding of health and safety regulations.
  • Ability to interact with patients, doctors, and staff in an effective manner.
  • Must have knowledge of procedure codes and patient billing.
  • Must have strong communication skills and exceptional hand skills.

WORK SCHEDULE: This position may be occasionally required to work early evenings.
