Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School of Chicago, IL is seeking to hire a full-time Crisis Intervention Leader to play a vital role in our students' academic success. This position offers a competitive salary based upon experience. Our staff works Monday-Friday, 8:15am-4:30pm with a shortened academic day in the summer and time off in July and August.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably with a background in education or counseling
  • Minimum of two years of experience working with severely emotionally disturbed students as a counselor or within a classroom setting required
  • Ability to become a certified Therapeutic Intervention trainer and lead interventions required
  • All Crisis Intervention Leaders will be trained in TCI, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention techniques once hired.
  • Applicants should possess a strong commitment to strength perspective, empowering families, and a willingness to work in a high demanding work situation that requires flexibility and innovation
  • Illinois State Certification, Type 39 - within 90 days of employment

  • Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and Floor Management - 80%
    • Monitor and evaluate each student's level of functioning
    • Facilitate conversations between students and educational staff so that students can remain in class
    • Conduct or facilitate life space interviews with students when their behavior becomes disruptive to classroom learning activities
    • Determines whether a student poses a risk to the safety of himself/herself or to others. Ensures that a safety plan has been developed and implemented when there is a safety risk
    • Utilize approved non-violent physical therapeutic techniques when clinically indicated to ensure safety
    • Works with the educational staff to reintegrate students back into the classroom following life space interviews and crisis situations
    • Communicate with outside safety agencies (U of C Police Department, the Chicago Police Department, and the Chicago Fire Department) when necessary.
  • Floor Management
    • Prioritize needs across the program daily in regard to student and staff needs
    • Be aware of school rules and procedures and support educational staff in the implementation of these rules.
    • Oversee student transitions at the end of each class period
    • Monitors classes, both from the school hallway and within the classrooms, as a proactive measure to student support
    • Respond to educational staff requests for assistance with medical questions, behavioral support, etc.
    • Spend observation time in the classrooms to provide additional support for students and teachers
    • Functions as a teaching assistant, at school leadership direction, on days that a teacher or teaching assistant is absent
  • Collaboration with Education and Clinical Team - 10%
    • Utilize the supervision process to communicate, plan and problem solve classroom issues with direct supervisor.
    • Serve as a consultant to the education staff to help understand and resolve difficult interactions with and between students
    • Collaborate with clinicians to understand and support students' social and emotional needs within the academic environment
    • Participate and maintain an active role on the Emergency Planning Committee
  • Documentation and Communication - 5%
    • Complete all documentation of crisis situations by end of each workday
    • Track time-out-of-class minutes
    • Review and edit daily Unusual Incident Reports (UIR)
    • Communicate UIR's to parents by phone
    • Maintain communication logs
    • Communicate pertinent information to case managers by end of day for parent notification
    • Attend and contribute to team meetings and clinical reviews on an ongoing basis
    • Communicates all significant concerns and unusual incidents to school leadership (i.e., Principal, Assistant Principal)
