Do you have experience in construction and want to work at an organization that builds homes using volunteer labor and funds raised from the support of local businesses, faith community, individual donors and fund-raising events?

The Construction Manager has responsibility for all construction and repair projects undertaken by HFH Wausau, including project budgets, schedules, materials procurement, coordination of contractors; and the training and supervision of volunteers and subcontractors. This position will also coordinate with local school district technical education departments to facilitate and manage the Habitat-sponsored, student-based, home builds.

Responsibilities:

Construction Activities Responsibilities:

  • Work with site selection committee to identify suitable building lots and rehab projects.
  • Assist in developing construction plans and specifications.
  • Organize timely ordering and delivery of materials and supplies including Gift in Kind
  • Obtain appropriate surveys, permits and inspections.
  • Maintain and ensure on-time and on-budget completion of projects.
  • Ensure all standards are met related to accessible and energy efficiency practices and other building programs in which the affiliate may be involved; explore new construction methods and materials.
  • Maintain tools and equipment inventory.
  • Coordinate tools and equipment among construction sites.
  • Oversee completion of “punch-list” items and coordinate any warranty work required in first year.
  • Conduct walk-through inspection with future homeowner upon completion of the home, providing necessary warranty cards and manuals for the homeowner manual.

Supervisory Role Responsibilities:

  • Responsibility to provide staffing, leadership and adequate materials and tools to create excellent volunteer experiences on construction sites.
  • Creatively engage volunteers with a variety of skill levels and provide opportunities to learn new skills.
  • Ensure proper training and instructions on Habitat’s construction practices and safety procedures are given to all volunteers.
  • Implement and enforce safety policy and OSHA safety standards on site.
  • Document and report all incidents and injuries that occur on construction site.
  • Act as a member of the Construction and Site Selection Committees.
  • Provide updates to committees and monthly reports of projects to the board.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Work closely with affiliate office staff and committees to coordinate weekly and monthly schedules as well as long-term planning for volunteer needs.
  • Notify family mentors and/or office staff of any issues or concerns arising on site.
  • Turn in paperwork including invoices, receipts and mileage claims in a timely manner.
  • Participate in the groundbreaking and dedication ceremonies for each home.
  • Review and approve invoices and sales slips for purchased materials and all other construction-related expenses.
  • Implement a regular bidding process for subcontractor and vendors where applicable. Develop good working relationships with subcontractors. Ensure contractor’s license and certificate of insurance are on file prior to subcontractor starting project.
  • Develop and utilize annual budgets for home construction, tool, and equipment acquisition.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • At least 3 years of experience in construction drafting, project management, and/or building; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with construction tools and equipment; including electric and pneumatic hand tools, lifts, and vehicles.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Obtain Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Contractor Qualifier Certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Complete Habitat Competent Person training within 90 days of hire.
  • First-aid & CPR certification preferred.
  • Ability to articulate the mission and core values of Habitat for Humanity.
  • Proficient at all dimensions of residential construction, rehab and repair including knowledge of local, state, and universal building codes, planning, and permitting systems.
  • Ability to organize, plan & implement construction activities to maximize efficiencies and control costs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills relating to a variety of people, personalities and background including contractors, volunteers, recipient families, and staff.
  • Knowledge of and willingness to enforce safety procedures at all work sites.
  • Flexibility regarding work assignments and work hours.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to perform tasks on all areas and aspects of construction projects by lifting heavy objects, walking and standing for long periods of time and performing strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions. Requires the ability to climb ladders, work with specialized tools and equipment, lumber, materials, lifting and manipulating objects, the ability to push, pull, and carry objects.
  • Exposure to characteristic construction site dangers.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $55,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
