Our client provides all flight training for Minnesota State University’s Aviation program as well as a full service FBO which includes airplane maintenance, Avionics, pilot shop and airplane sales. The company also operates two other flight programs, all which are in partnership with an institution of higher education. In addition the company has recently taken over fueling services at the New Ulm Municipal Airport located in beautiful New Ulm Minnesota.

A Day In The Life of a Chief Flight Instructor

The position you are applying for serves as the Chief Flight Instructor for all flight training courses, ensuring compliance with Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) in the training of students and supervision of flight instructors while collaborating with BGSU Aviation faculty and staff to report student grades, issues, and concerns.

Essential Duties of The Chief Flight Instructor

  • Develop, maintain, and enforce FOM policies
  • Certify training records, enrollment certificates, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) check rides, stage and/or final test given to students; recommend grades for all flight courses
  • Establish, maintain and submit accurate student and instructional records to University in a timely manner
  • Stay up-to-date on regulatory and procedural changes in the flight training environment; review flight training curriculum and update TCOs with the FAA as needed
  • Apply and maintain standards of quality to operating methods, processes, systems, and procedures; implement changes as necessary to maintain a compliant professional pilot program; integrate knowledge of industry trends and professional training to continuously improve program quality
  • Establish and maintain a standardization and proficiency training process for each flight instructor; ensure annual recurrent proficiency checks are conducted in accordance to FARs; supervise and monitor team performance and make modifications or recommendations as needed; ensure compliance with FARs
  • Ensure student records are kept in an orderly and accurate manner
  • Audit student records and correct any errors while following applicable procedures
  • Maintain a cooperative and communicative relationship with FAA representatives
  • Be an ambassador to safety by following applicable FOM procedures, file reports using the current safety reporting system, attend safety meetings, and maintain a general safety mindset
  • Serve on committees and perform other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and ability to follow federal, state, and local laws, guidelines, policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of trends, developments, new technologies affecting the professional flight program
  • Knowledge of flight curriculum and how to modify TCOs
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and ability to learn other technology platforms
  • Awareness of public/private partnership with University and ability to maintain positive relationship
  • Experience in supervising and training staff and students from diverse cultures and/or backgrounds
  • Strong and professional verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective problem-solving skills and ability to maintain confidentiality as needed
  • Ability to authentically assess and evaluate staff and students’ needs/progress
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse population and to maintain composure when facing difficult situations
  • Ability to multitask, organize, prioritize, and follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion with high attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a team environment
  • Ability to use independent judgment and decision-making skills to analyze problems, identify solutions, and take appropriate action
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, University partners, students and the public

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling.
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs. routinely and up to 100 lbs. occasionally
  • Frequent work in small places, extreme temperatures, heights above six feet and noisy environments.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline
  • Meet all FAR 141.35 Chief Instructor Qualifications
  • Current FAA Flight Instructor Airplane Single and Multi-Engine
  • Current FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate – Airplane Single and Multi-Engine land
  • Current FAA 3rd Class Medical Certificate
  • Current FAA Flight Instructor – Instrument Airplane
  • Preferred three years’ flight instruction experience in part 141 environment.
  • 12-month Flight Instructor Refresher Course
