Bookkeeper

Reports to: Senior Pastor
Job Type: Part-time, 16-24 hours per week

Job Summary

Bookkeeper must possess analytical skills, attention to detail, maintaining accuracy of fiscal documentation/files, and solid communication abilities. Candidates must have an associate degree or strong accounting experience.

Strong technology skills are critical, particularly expertise with Microsoft Excel and prior general ledger software experience. This is a part-time position, maximum of 24 hours per week. The Part-time Bookkeeper will work closely with the Trustee Ministry and assist the Pastor in the financial oversight of the Church and its members.

The bookkeeper reports directly to the Pastor.

Responsibilities & Job Duties

  • Process Cash, checks, and credit cards.
  • Enter all contributions and receipts in accounting system and deposit cash.
  • Perform Accounts Payable (AP) duties: process timely payment of vendor invoices and other checks, retain adequate documentation, and generate ad hoc AP Report when required.
  • Check Post Office box weekly or more frequently as needed.
  • Communicate/enter weekly timesheets for employees for payroll processing.
  • Record weekly and monthly journal entries (e.g., payroll, 403B, mortgage payment, etc.).
  • Reconcile monthly bank accounts for Trustee Ministry review.
  • Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliation of banking accounts for Trustee Ministry review.
  • Track and maintain Sales and Use taxes for Quarterly North Carolina State reimbursement.
  • Perform special projects as assigned by the Pastor or Trustee Ministry Leaders
  • Attend Church Conferences.

Qualifications

  • Strong communications skills; comfortable dealing with sensitive and confidential information.
  • Ability to communicate with church members and church employees at various levels.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and works well within a team environment.
  • Ability to work independently, solve problems, and be flexible.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to details; proven competence with collection management of documentation and paperwork.
  • Ability to produce balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Intermediate MS Excel skills.

Desired Education & Experience

  • Minimum Associate Degree.
  • Two or more years of Accounts Payable experience.
  • Two or more years of financial accounting experience.
  • Two or more years of general ledger experience.
  • Experience with non-profit, fund accounting, or ACS Realm is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Paychex is a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s license
  • Ability to physically perform the duties required and to work in the environmental conditions such as: Maneuvering in office space, reaching file cabinets, filing, scanning, copying, mailing, e-mail, and making phone calls.
