The Selection Process
The duration of the selection process is approximately 2 to 5 months from the date of the interview. The process involves the following activities/steps: (1) Online application, (2) Panel Interview (3) Background Investigation (4) Polygraph exam (5) Approval by the Hiring Board.

Reapplication Process
An applicant who does not pass the panel interview or is disqualified during the Extended Background phase, may reapply one year from the date of their online application.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The Part-Time Background Investigator performs a variety of clerical and investigative work in conducting pre-employment background investigations. Incumbents perform duties in accordance with Florida Statutes and established City and Departmental policies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.

Under the supervision of the Professional Standards Division sergeant, conducts thorough background investigations of applicants as assigned, including but not limited to, neighborhood checks, reference checks, employment history checks, and criminal history checks.

Prepares appropriate forms and reports detailing the findings of assigned investigations.

Conforms to all regulations, policies, procedures, and safety rules.

Work out of the Coral Gables Police Department Monday thru Thursday, 7.25 hours per day during daytime hours; Some evenings and weekends.

At times, travel to other cities may be required based on investigation.

Performs other related tasks as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

Associates degree from a U.S. Department of Education recognized accredited college or university.

Strong writing ability and skilled in public speaking. Experienced using Microsoft Word.

Law enforcement or Analytical experience preferred.

Must pass a background investigation (to include Polygraph Exam).

Must have a Florida driver's license.

A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum education requirement.

Disqualifying Factors
Moral Character: An applicant, who, at any time during the employment application process, demonstrates dishonesty, withholds requested information (omissions), or whose background investigation reveals derogatory information will be disqualified.

Drug usage: The City of Coral Gables Police Department has a strict policy regarding past and present drug usage. Applicants must not have used any illegal substance, including prescription drugs without a prescription. The use of marijuana may be acceptable only if it was experimental in nature.

Other disqualifying factors include but are not limited to - Financial/credit irresponsibility, Immoral/unethical conduct, and Criminal conduct.

PART-TIME (15-24 Hours):

ANNUAL LEAVE: 4 days per year (1 day is equivalent to 4.80 hours). Leave is accrued but not able to use during first 90 days of employment.

SICK LEAVE: 4 days per year. Employees may convert to annual leave 15 hours if more than 2 days have been accrued and unused during the fiscal year.

HOLIDAYS: 11 holidays (If scheduled to work, plus 1 floating day).

BEREAVEMENT: 3 Days for the death of an immediate family member (Parent, spouse, or child) and 2 days for any other immediate family member.

ADMINISTRATIVE SICK LEAVE: Employees who have not used sick leave, leave without pay, or have not lost time due to an on-the-job injury in a 6 month period are entitled to 1 day of administrative leave.

CASH PAY OUT OF VACATION: Employees may request payment of accrued/earned annual leave not to exceed 15 hours at the rate of pay in effect at the time of the request, provided such request is made no later than September 30, 2015 (or as amended every fiscal year).

MILITARY LEAVE: 30 work days every year with pay and the remainder of the period shall be without pay, unless otherwise provided by City Commission.

JURY DUTY: Time off with pay if scheduled to work.


PART-TIME (25 -29 Hours)

ANNUAL LEAVE: 8 days per year (1 day is equivalent to 5.80 hours). Leave is accrued but not able to use during first 90 days of employment.

SICK LEAVE: 8 days per year. Employees may convert to annual leave 30 hours if more than 4 days have been accrued and unused during the fiscal year.

HOLIDAYS: 11 holidays (If scheduled to work, plus 1 floating day).

BEREAVEMENT: 3 Days for the death of an immediate family member (Parent, spouse, or child) and 2 days for any other immediate family member.
