The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Transportation Engineer 3 to service as the Assistant Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Engineer in Seattle, WA. WSDOT is committed to Intelligent Transportation Systems / Traffic Systems Maintenance and Operations (ITS/TSMO) using technology and coordination between disciplines to better move people and goods. This position serves as a technical expert in the fields of ITS and ITS communications and serves as a System Integration Engineer for the Northwest Region (NWR). This position ensures that new ITS devices are deployed quickly, existing ITS devices continue to function, and the system is available to manage traffic. The region’s ITS system is essential to maintaining the performance of the highway network and the interface to other modes of transportation including bus, train, bicycle, pedestrian, etc.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Assistant ITS Engineer will:


  • Maintain and modify the programming for freeway ramp control systems for safe and efficient operation.
  • Investigate and troubleshoot reported problems with Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) network devices.
  • Perform detailed review of complex ITS designs for compliance with WSDOT and other standards.
  • Use system engineering principles to coordinate the integration of new technologies into the existing traffic management system.
  • Coordinate and consult with construction offices on inspection of ITS installations (including individual ITS devices, communication equipment, fiber optic cables and interfaces, communication hubs, video, and data transmission, etc.) during construction projects.
  • Recommend solutions to construction offices that deviate from plans or specifications to solve field problems.
  • Propose solutions (including re-design) to problems arising during construction.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • One (1) year experience as a Transportation Engineer 2 or equivalent level work.
  • One (1) year of experience with ITS network management and the operation of Intelligent Transportation Systems devices.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of engineering principles, methods, and practices.
  • Experience with making modifications to the programming for control systems.
  • Experience providing detailed review of complex engineering designs.
  • Experience with coordination and integration of new technology into existing systems.
  • Experience with reviewing plans and specifications.
  • Experience performing fiber optic testing (power meter, OTDR) and interpreting test results from fiber optic testing.
  • Experience working with data communication protocols (Ethernet, serial, telephony).
  • Experience reading and understanding technical manuals and explaining technical information related to ITS and data communications.
  • Experience communicating technical information in written and verbal forms.
  • Experience with the application of mathematical engineering formulas and equations.
  • Experience writing technical ITS and communication specifications.
  • Possesses the writing skills to clearly convey requests, findings, and proposals relating to engineering topics.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Two (2) years of experience reviewing ITS Plans and Specifications
  • Two (2) years of experience writing ITS Contract Plans and Special Provisions
  • Knowledge of WSDOT freeway management practices and principles.
  • Fundamental understanding of the ITS structure and elements around which the NWR TMC is built.
  • Experience navigating the TMC server network and services connecting to NG_TMS for TMC operation.
  • Strong understanding of WSDOT’s PS&E guidelines and standards.

  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements.   • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
  • Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 357-16-197 mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
