Wake County Food Quality & Access Specialist Job at AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps North Carolina

The Food Quality & Access Specialist VISTA will implement capacity building strategies identified by the 2023 update of the Wake County Food Security Plan. Partner agencies and community focus groups have identified key barriers to food access and the impacts this has on health. Suggested strategies include: increasing connections of farmers with emergency food site operators in a planful and systematic manner, improving the productivity of community gardens and nutrition education, increasing the food delivery options through innovative partnerships, and increasing collaboration and connection among the 100’s of partners active in this work. We anticipate strong partnership with the following types of organizations: Farmers Markets, Food Pantries, Food Banks, Community Gardens, Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) Food Sovereignty groups, Farmers, Food Aggregation Sites, The Hunters for the Hungry program, Hungry Harvest, Ripe for Revival and various departments within municipal and county government. One exciting development is the potential to increase the amount of meat available in area food pantries. This is often the highest cost food item for families as well as pantry providers. The North Carolina Hunters for the Hungry, Inc. (NCHFTH) is a coalition of conservation and nonprofit organizations working together with corporations, individuals and state agencies. Hunters for the Hungry has the shared goal to be actively involved in the fight against hunger and malnutrition in North Carolina. The VISTA will create a marketing and outreach plan to increase participation in the Hunters for the Hungry (HftH) donation program, whereby harvested deer, within hunting season, can be donated, processed and distributed to a network of community pantries, for use by those living with food insecurity. The goals would be two-fold, with targets to increase both processors and donation sites and the number of hunters and donors.

Member Duties : The VISTA member will conduct resource mapping exercises, asset mapping activities, host partnership development networking events to increase communication and collaboration among partners, research and apply for grants to support long-term sustainable funding of projects, and guide development and implementation of pilot projects in partnership with grassroots nonprofits across the region. The VISTA will seek innovative sources of fresh produce, meat, and dairy for emergency food partners.
