The Underwriting Operations Supervisor is responsible for supervising the operations of the Underwriting Department in addition to being responsible for providing support to the underwriting function through customer service and processing of underwriting files. This includes direct supervision of the department support personnel. This role is responsible for maintaining an efficient operational workflow in support of company strategy. Continuous improvement of department operations and best practices are critical elements. The Underwriting Operations Supervisor is a leader and requires a collaborative team oriented approach.

Key functions include but are not limited to:

  • Provide excellent customer service by answering phones within three rings
  • Handle phone and email requests/inquiries in a quick, professional, and courteous manner.
  • Organize and process policy endorsements and incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Quote new business, issue policies and process renewals in accordance with Underwriter and Company specifications.
  • Achieve a working knowledge of the company’s new business selection philosophy
  • Directly supervise all underwriting support staff.
  • Manage group and program filings and related system support.
  • Work with compliance department to ensure company is in compliance with state and regulatory matters in regards to policy forms and rating.
  • Review files to ensure proper documentation and adherence to company guidelines.
  • Analyze current business process and procedures to ensure optimal work-flow, continuous improvement and best practices.
  • Ensure a high level of external and internal service is consistently provided.
  • Assist in planning and organizing resources for handling peak volume periods.
  • Identify training and development needs for staff.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university preferred
  • 3+ years P&C insurance operations experience, preference towards WC Carrier experience
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills
  • Strong organization, time management, and multi-tasking skills
  • Must be proficient with MS Office products, especially Excel
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment
  • Working knowledge of NCCI and CA WCIRB basic manual rules, premium rating and standard forms preferred
  • Underwriting, leadership and management/supervision experience preferred
