Description of the Department or Unit
About the Department of Communication:
The Department of Communication at Appalachian State University focuses on preparing students to succeed in the varied fields within the communication industry. The department offers five majors – advertising, communication studies, digital journalism, electronic media/broadcasting and public relations – and a minor in communication. Graduates work in a wide range of positions in media, corporate, agency, government and nonprofit organizations. The department is responsible for the management of five award-winning student-run media outlets: The Appalachian news organization; AppTV, the department’s HD TV channel; 90.5 WASU-FM The App, an FCC-licensed terrestrial college radio station; Second Story Media, a communication agency working with local nonprofits and other organizations to develop communication campaigns; and The Peel Literature and Arts Review literary magazine, providing a print and digital showcase for student art and stories. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include teaching three classes per semester in TV news writing, reporting and production, and other classes based on departmental needs; advising students in the development and production of a weekly TV news show on AppTV; and participating in departmental governance and service.
