Truck Foreman - Day Shift Job at Allan Myers, Inc

Responsibilities:
The Truck Foreman for the Allan Myers, Virginia Transportation team is a critical role responsible for driving effective and efficient dump truck support to field project teams across a wide range of construction, asphalt, and stock projects for the company’s Virginia operational footprint. The Truck Foreman is responsible for leading, managing and supporting our dump truck operators and fostering an environment of operational excellence and continuous improvement.

Truck Foreman Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Reports to the Transportation Manager


  • Provides frontline leadership to, and management of, dump truck drivers


  • Operations:
    • Manages shift schedule provided by the Dispatcher
    • Ensures drivers are aware and understand shift schedule requirements
      • Communicates changes to the drivers immediately
    • Validates all internal and external trucks start on time and perform in accordance with the published schedule
      • Ensures hired hauler trucks are signed in and monitors performance via fleet management systems
      • Communicates deficiencies or issues to the Plant and Project Team leaders
    • Assists the project teams with schedule adjustments during the assigned shift
      • Redistributes trucks between projects
      • Takes immediate action due to schedule changes i.e., start times, cancellations, project/job assignment changes for drivers, truck quantities, broker truck requirements, etc.
    • Communicates any shift or work changes immediately


  • Manages driver performance:
    • Defines and communicates performance expectations
    • Provides real time feedback, guidance, and coaching
    • Identifies skill and knowledge training needs and takes required action as needed
    • Performs periodic ride along and check rides with drivers
    • Evaluates performance growth
    • Attendance:
      • Monitors driver attendance and reports absences to the management team and HR
      • Discusses attendance issues with the Transportation Manager
      • Assists in the development of corrective action plans
      • Maintains documentation of discussions
      • Elevates to next management level as needed
      • Verifies proper functionality and accuracy of time clocks and scanners


  • Driver check-ins:
    • Conducts scheduled monthly check-ins with each driver, listens, provides direction and coaching, and follows-up as needed
    • Discusses any instances where drivers are not being treated with dignity and respect


  • Communicates with project team throughout the shift (Superintendent/Field Manager)
    • Checks-in with the project and plant teams at the start and end of each shift
    • Mitigates or corrects any dump truck issues (Allan Myers or hired hauler)


  • Communicates issues with hired haulers and external truck Brokers. Partner closely with our external partners and develop collaborative relationships.
  • Provides an end of shift truck summary outlining the trucking performance for each job, specifically describing any areas in which a truck/driver did not perform, or support as expected.
  • Moves between plant locations – plans strategically, remains flexible and mobile
  • Visits delivery and project sites
  • Helps identify and mitigate delivery route problems – validates directions and pin-drops


  • Manages supplies
    • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
    • Reports supply reorder needs to the Dispatcher i.e., 2222, spray bottles, etc.
    • Preventative maintenance fluids
    • Driver forms and documents


  • Equipment:
    • Creates and sends an equipment status list daily
      • Announce any issues identified with equipment – safety and/or mechanical
    • Reviews equipment down list daily and provides feedback as required
    • Recommends truck allocation changes by location
    • Collaborates closely with the maintenance shop management to ensure equipment faults and mechanical failures are identified and repaired
    • Coordinates movement of trucks to the repair shop/facility as needed
    • Monitors cleanliness of trucks and promotes the Allan Myers “Image of Excellence”


  • Safety
    • Enforces the proper wear and use of PPE
    • Ensures all safety policies and procedures are understood and enforced
    • Moves between shift start locations daily, and participate in shift huddles
    • Emphasizes safe operations and discuss current safety talking points
    • Collaborates closely with the Allan Myers safety team
    • Conducts periodic pre/post check inspections with the drivers
    • Reports any equipment safety incidents, accidents, or issues immediate

Qualifications:

License/Certification: Valid Commercial Driver’s License (class A or B)


Required Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum 6-years of relevant experience - (dump truck operations)
  • Previous experience as a Truck Lead, Supervisor or Foreman
  • Intermediate computer and MS Office abilities
