Teacher Assistant (3) Positions

Tribal School

Department of Human Services

Hourly Wage: $15.43/Regular/Full-Time


Helps with the instruction of eligible students. Functions with intermittent supervision in planning lessons, instruction and collection of educational data, providing additional assistance and instruction to students.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Assists students within small groups or individually with daily lessons as needed.
  • Reinforce lessons presented by Education Specialist by reviewing material with students one-on-one or in small groups.
  • Corrects students work and maintains data on student performance relative to objectives.
  • Enforce school and class rule to help teach students proper behavior.
  • Help teachers with recordkeeping, such as tracking attendance and calculating grades.
  • Instructs and tutors students one-on-one regarding school guidelines.
  • Help teachers prepare for lessons by getting materials ready and setting up equipment such as computers.
  • Paraprofessional will administer and score pre and posttests to students.
  • Help supervise students in class, between classes, during lunch and breaks, and on field trips.
  • Enforce rules of behavior for students as outlined in school policy and prepares documentation on any infractions.
  • Monitors student behavior during transition periods at breakfast, lunch, and after school.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Instructs students in variety of activities either individually or group settings (i.e. academic subjects, reading, math, language, P.E., etc.) for the purpose of reinforcing instructional objectives, implementing plans for remediation of student deficiencies in accordance with individual educational program goals and promoting student success in the general education classrooms.
  • Maintain instructional materials and student files/records (i.e. adapting instructional materials, cleaning work areas, checking papers, taking attendance, set up audiovisual equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability of items and/or providing reliable information.
  • Attends meetings and in-service presentations (i.e. First Aid, CPR, teacher-in-service, emergency procedures, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job duties.
  • Assists teachers to administer assessments to groups of students.
  • Performs record keeping (i.e. student records, daily progress charts, student observations, student portfolios, etc.) for supporting the teacher in providing necessary records/documentation.
  • Assists school staff to plan extracurricular activities and supervise students on field trips.
  • Works with other staff by participating in groups such as technology, English, math, and culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a computer for recordkeeping and correspondence.
  • Ability to work closely with all Tribal School staff to ensure a positive work environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department staff, supervisors/managers, elected officials, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, with all levels of personnel including employees, supervisors, elected officials, etc.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high degree of personal integrity and be able to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or needed.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have a qualifying score on the Education Testing Service (ETS) para-educator assessment.
  • Must have completed an apprenticeship as a para-educator, in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
  • Required to pass pre-employment drug test.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.
  • Required to complete a background check according to Yakama Nation Tribal School requirements.
  • Must not have any history of child abuse or neglect.
  • Must not have any history of drug or alcohol abuse.
  • Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Associate Degree in Education or related field.
  • Must have one (1) year of classroom experience in grades 7-12 preferred.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT DRUG TEST
: Is required for Pre-Employment with the Yakama Nation. During employment, tribal employees are also subject to random testing (YN Personnel Policy Manual, Chapter 2.9.6, Section (a), (g), Alcohol and Drug-Free Workplace Policy).


TRAINEE
: The Yakama Nation reserves the right to practice Indian Preference by selecting an Indian applicant as a trainee at a reduced pay rate than announced. A training plan is developed to assist employee to reach required qualification requirements and performance level. After completing training plan, work performance will be evaluated. Upon satisfying qualification requirements, employee will obtain entry level pay.


INDIAN PREFERENCE
: In efforts to practice Self-Determination, the Yakama Nation grants Indian Preference for employment, promotions, and transfers to its employees and qualified applicants as appropriate. This may limit career opportunities for non-Indian applicants and candidates.


Preference for employment will be granted to qualified individuals meeting minimal qualification criteria in the following order pursuant to the YN Personnel Policy Manual Section 2.1.3:

  • 10-points= Enrolled member of Yakama Nation.
  • 8-points= Indian (enrolled) spouse of an enrolled Yakama member.
  • 6-points= Other Indian (member of a federally recognized tribe).
  • 8-points= Indian (enrolled) descendant of enrolled Yakama member.
  • 2-points= Non-Indian spouse of an enrolled Yakama member.
  • 0-points= Non-Indian.

Personnel Policy Manual Section 2.1.4:

  • Positions funded under non-638 federal funding: 8-points= Indian (member of a federally recognized tribe).


VETERAN PREFERENCE
: Is pursuant to Section 402 of the Vietnam Era Veteran's Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974. For verification, must provide a copy of honorable DD-214.

Application points using the weighted point factor system: Disabled Veterans receive 10 points; All other Veteran's receive 5 points.


IMMIGRATION
: If selected for employment with the Yakama Nation, you will be required to provide documentation stating you are authorized to work in the United States.
