Idaho Power — headquartered in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for a System/Application Administrator, Senior, or LSO System Administrator to join our Power Supply Load Serving Operations team.

While this position is based at Idaho Power’s western Boise location, we offer both flexible schedules and the opportunity to work up to 40% remote.

System Administrators on the Grid Solutions team supports applications and systems used to manage the electrical grid. Applications include Control Systems, Energy Management System (EMS), Outage Management System (OMS), Mobile Workforce Management (MWM), Energy Markets, Trading and Scheduling and various supporting systems. The successful candidate’s primarily focus will be providing OMS application administration and support.
What does a System Administrator do for us?
Under supervision System Administrators analyze, install, configure, upgrade, test, document, monitor and maintain software and hardware in support of business processing requirements. Supported applications and systems may include operating systems, business applications, server hardware, security tools, monitoring tools, Web servers, Application servers, Integration servers, and other departmental or enterprise applications or systems.

Provides technical support for problems not resolved by the Integrated Operations Center or IT Service Desk.

What does a Senior System Administrator do for us?
Under minimal supervision System Administrators manage, analyze, install, configure, upgrade, test, document, monitor and maintain software and hardware in support of business processing requirements. Supported applications and systems may include operating systems, business applications, server hardware, security tools, monitoring tools, Web servers, Application servers, Integration servers, and other departmental or enterprise applications or systems.

Provides advanced technical support and accepts ownership of problems not resolved by the Integrated Operations Center or IT Service Desk.

Participates in the development and execution of technology strategies to support organizational activities and direction.

Provides advanced level support for applications and systems; including troubleshooting, performance, monitoring, cost-benefit, security, and licensing analysis. Stays aware of industry trends, business requirements, and technical design methodologies to aid in the development of creative/innovative IT/OT solutions.
What does an LSO System Administrator do for us?
Under minimal supervision LSO System Administrators analyze, install, configure, upgrade, test, document, monitor and maintain software and hardware in support of business processing and power grid supporting Operational Technology (OT) requirements for the LSO. Supported systems may include operating systems, business applications, server hardware, security tools, monitoring tools, Web servers, Application servers, Integration servers, and other departmental or enterprise applications or systems.

Provides advanced technical support and accepts ownership of problems not resolved by the Integrated Operations Center or IT Service Desk.

Participates in the development and execution of technology strategies to support organizational activities and direction.

Provides advanced level support for applications and systems, including troubleshooting, performance, monitoring, cost-benefit, security, and licensing analysis. Stays aware of industry trends, business requirements, and technical design methodologies to aid in the development of creative/innovative IT/OT solutions.

Demonstrates knowledge and expertise in system administration of infrastructure, power grid applications and support systems that are required to support mission critical control environments. This includes proficiency in individual areas of expertise as well as support for a wide breadth of technology. REQUIRED SKILLS
System Administrator:
Knowledge of:

  • Manage and support complex applications and computer systems involving WAN communications and large database structure
Preferred:
  • Expert knowledge of scripting languages including PowerShell, Bash, or Python
Skills in:
  • Enterprise application administration
Preferred:
  • Project management, leadership, mentoring, and training skills
  • Proficiency at scripting and code development and best practices
  • Proficient in developing and implementing new technical frameworks and work practices
  • Manage and support complex computer systems involving WAN communications and large database structure
  • Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Power BI, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and/or analytical and reporting applications
  • Proficient knowledge of scripting languages including PowerShell, Bash, or Python
LSO System Administrator:
LSO Level builds on existing knowledge, skills, and abilities. Additional items include:
Knowledge of:
  • Must have a high level of technical knowledge and be able to put that knowledge to practical use and solutions
  • Strong working knowledge of department supported software applications
  • Other department supported technology
  • Strong working knowledge of power grid and associated mission-critical infrastructure and applications
  • Expert knowledge of FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory commission) and NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) regulatory requirements and their implications on system administration of supporting infrastructure for a power grid
    • Strong working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Modeling for mission-critical applications
Skills in:
  • Organization and detail orientation
Ability to:
  • Provide advanced user support of computers and software related to power grid information and control systems and field systems
  • Must be able to explain ideas and highly technical material in ways that non-technical people can understand
Preferred:
  • Provide application administration for any of the following: Energy Management System (GE and OSI), Outage Management System (CGI, OSI, MSG Versify), Mobile Workforce Management (MWM CGI), Energy Markets (CAISO (California Independent System Operator), SPP), Trading and Scheduling (OATI)

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field
OR
  • An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
Preferred:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, or a related technology field
Experience:
  • System Administrator - 2 or more years relevant Technology Administration experience
Preferred:
  • 4 or more years relevant Technology Administration experience
  • Senior System Administrator - 5 or more years of professional Technology Administration experience
Preferred:
  • 8 or more years of experience in a corporate multi-platform technology environment
  • LSO System Administrator - 7 years of professional Technology Administration experience including 3 years of experience in power grid systems
Preferred:
  • 10 years of professional Technology Administration experience including 3 years of experience in power grid systems at IPC
Licenses & Certifications:
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires working at a desk/computer for extended periods of time. It requires the use of office equipment, fine motor skills including typing on the computer, dialing phones, filing paper, and working in close proximity to other people. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Works with regular guidance in own area of knowledge. Solves a range of straightforward problems, analyzes viable solutions, and assesses each using standard procedures.

Participate in 24x7 on call rotation and report to an Idaho Power Control center within 60 minutes during on call-rotation weeks.
