The Role

_The McPherson, KS, CertainTeed plant is seeking a Supervisor Trainee to oversee Production operations. This position supervises employees and directs activities to ensure safety and compliance, while achieving quality, service, and productivity targets. This position is critical in communicating with the front-line employees, ensuring they are informed of all plant information, changes, and updates in a timely manner. The position is responsible for maintaining and communicating plant updates to management in key business areas, including safety, environment, health, employee relations, daily production, and assigned projects.

Position will be assigned to work either 2nd or 3rd shift.

Adherence to EHS standards

  • Develops and cultivates a team-oriented “working safely” culture throughout the plant with a focus on zero injuries, work-related health conditions, and spills.
  • Is responsible to ensure employees and operations comply with all EHS standards, including active participation in behavior-based safety reporting and programs; preventive audits/programs (safety, machine guarding).
  • Begins to understand and lead root cause analysis for all shift incidents, developing a preventative approach.

Quality leadership

  • Manages and cultivates a culture that has an unrelenting commitment to quality; ensuring compliance with all quality standards and providing coaching and support regarding shift conflicts/disagreements related to quality parts.
  • Provides leadership for technical and quality teams for consensus to resolve quality issues, understanding and teaching the impact that decisions have on parts quality.
  • Understands and educates shifts regarding ISO requirements.

World Class Manufacturing

  • Is accountable for all aspects related to production efficiencies, including first pass yield, up-time, throughput, pack rates, cycle time, scrap rates, and regrind re-use.
  • Utilizes visual factory tools to educate and motivate employees and project teams. Is responsible for accurate reporting (production, scrap, payroll hours).
  • Flexes and manages hours to ensure productivity targets are achieved, is accountable for paid time off management and reporting.
  • Understands and ensures compliant use of the work order system to resolve issues. Coordinates necessary plant resources to resolve issues with minimal down time.
  • Active participation in operations meetings, leads production, safety, 5S, and project team meetings.
  • Has ownership for shift technical staff, assisting with trouble-shooting technical issues.
  • Encourages and facilitates cooperative working relationship with other plant departments and provides feedback
  • Supports plant cost reduction initiatives by recommending and implementing cost reduction solutions.

Staff development

  • Will begin tolead, coach, and manage a team of technical support and machine attendants, developing a team-oriented focus and mindset.
  • Strives to develop a bottom-up approach to resolve issues and gain buy-in.
  • Creates and implements succession plans to ensure business stability and individual development. Is responsible for performance management for shifts; regular coaching sessions, 45-90-annual reviews.
  • Develops skill progression planning for employees on assigned shifts, ensuring compliance with CertainTeed Injection Molding Employee Handbook.
  • Coaches and develops shift and technical leads in areas of supervision, motivation, and conflict resolution. Identifies, seeks out, and coordinates skills training for shift personnel to improve professional development and performance.

“Your Skills Matter” What do you bring?

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferred
  • 2-3 years’ progressive work experience in a manufacturing environment or related internships in a manufacturing environment
  • Demonstrated leadership roles; past supervisory experience a plus
  • Understanding of plastic materials, processing, and equipment knowledge a plus
  • Decisiveness and ability to sort through ambiguity
  • Demonstrated technical aptitude
  • Good quantitative and analytical skills
  • Good coaching skills – peer, up-line, and indirect report
  • Good change management skills
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic to intermediate technical issues
  • Active listener – able to discern key points from employee discussions
  • General understanding of business management concepts
  • Some project management experience
