This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 20 hours per week) Technical Assistant for the Extension Service commercial horticulture program in Umatilla County at Oregon State University (OSU).

This program provides educational programming, applied research, and outreach serving the commercial horticulture industry (e.g., tree fruit, wine grapes, vegetables) in Milton-Freewater and Umatilla County.

The Student Research Assistant will be involved with the day-to-day field and lab research activities for several ongoing field experiments related to: vineyard cover crop evaluation; plant physiology and fruit composition effects of kaolin use in wine grapes; evaluation of established and novel green processing pea varieties; and surveys of insect and disease pests in orchards and vineyards.
Position Duties
Assist with field and lab-based activities for ongoing horticultural research projects:
  • Observe and record growth/phenology for vineyard and green pea research projects
  • Conduct measurements of grapevine physiological function (e.g., gas exchange, water status) for vineyard projects
  • Collect soil and plant tissue samples to submit for nutrient, disease, and pest status for all projects
  • Deploy/monitor insect traps and record data for vineyard and orchard projects.
  • Collect fruit samples in the field and conduct lab-based measurements of chemical composition for vineyard projects


Assist with analysis and publication of results for ongoing horticultural research projects:
  • Data entry for field and lab-based measurements
  • Assist with data analysis
  • Draft summaries and reports on project results
  • Help prepare text and figures for publication or presentation

Assist with additional tasks as they arise.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*


  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions (as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OSU Standard 125-155-0200) as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000 et seq.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Experience with lab or field-based research
  • Coursework in the biological, agricultural, natural, or related sciences with a lab component
  • Great organization, time-management, and ability to work independently
  • Good communication and problem solving skills


Working Conditions / Work Schedule
The student worker will work approximately 20 hours per week.

This position will require frequent outdoor work. The position is based in Milton-Freewater, OR, and will require frequent travel to field sites in the area.
