Location: BCNY Camp @ Harriman State Park, 553 Arden Valley Road, Southfields, NY 10975
Salary: 11,000 ( with additional compensation for training & prep)
Employment Type: Seasonal, Residential, June 1 - August 25, 2023
Mandatory Orientation: June 26 –30, 2023

About Us

The Boys’ Club of New York (BCNY), founded in 1876, is a youth development organization with the mission to empower boys and young men through outside of school programming at our clubhouses and our residential summer camp in Harriman State Park. BCNY’s Harriman Base Camp’s vision is to foster emotional, physical and ethical growth through thoughtful and diverse activities and programs for boys and young men age 10 through 17. BCNY campers will develop life skills and awareness of social responsibility through outdoor exploration and education. While appreciating their natural surroundings, they will become active stewards of the environment.

The Camp Specialist Supervisor will report to the Assistant Camp Director. Camp Specialist Supervisor plays an integral role in creating a magical summer camp experience for BCNY campers. They will cultivate programs and relationships with young people that are strength-based and restorative. They will have a deep commitment to diversity and equity and integrate the cultural background of young people within the program design. The Camp Specialist Supervisor is responsible for planning, coordinating, and carrying out activities facilitated by specialist or external partners for all campers and staff. Must be available for mandatory training in June.

Job Requirements
Summer Camp employees are not required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, however, BCNY strongly encourages all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and obtain a booster shot.

Responsibilities

  • To plan, direct and supervise camps specialist lead programming including archery, music, arts, and nature museum
  • Be available to assist specialists with any problems they might be having with campers or counselors. If necessary spend time in program area in order to observe and train specialist in working with problem.
  • Observe each program area for the purpose of supervision and training at least a twice a day.
  • Assist all specialists in developing programs that will meet the needs and interests of specific age groups.
  • The care and security of all equipment used in program.
  • Inform Assistant Camp Director of all equipment and supply needs.
  • Cleanliness of program areas.
  • Represent specialists at all supervisory meetings.
  • Attend all required meetings.
  • Teach specialists their responsibility during staff training and assist at counselor training.
  • Assist in the supervision at lunch.
  • Submit a written evaluation of all specialists twice during the season. Once at the middle of the season and at the end of the season.
  • Submit a written program evaluation at the end of the season.
  • Supervise the taking of inventory and storage of equipment at the end of the season.
  • Assist and facilitate Project Build
  • Along with the Assistant Camp Director, Head Counselors and Aquatics Supervisor make all needed program changes.
  • Report to the Assistant Camp Director at the end of each program day for the purpose of sharing information.

Skills
  • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Training and experience in a specific activity such as art, archery, nature or environmental studies to children.
  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in varied conditions.

Qualifications
  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Have a least 1 year of college experience or 2 years relevant experience
  • Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR.
  • Must submit health history record and examination form prior to first day of work.
  • Ability to interact with all age levels.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English or Mandarin/English preferred
