Sommelier
SUMMARY
Sommelier will assist Cane & Canoe and other departments as needed in administering the sale of alcoholic beverages as well as teaching and mentoring bartenders, servers, and other associates involved in the sale of such beverages. Sommelier will be of further assistance to all departments of the resort when the management team determines that their expertise is beneficial to providing brand-worthy levels of service.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Job duties include; although are not limited to:
  • Working on the floor order taking, selling, servicing and ensuring proper all around service standards.
  • Work with restaurant manager to determine appropriate pricing strategies.
  • Work with restaurant manager to maintain established inventory.
  • Working with restaurant management to oversee beverage costs and pricing.
  • Assist in training and development of staff.
OTHER
  • Regular attendance is essential to the successful performance of this position. Irregular attendance will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
  • Due to the fluctuation in business levels in the hospitality industry, employees may be required to work varying schedules to reflect the business needs of the Resort. Also, participation is required at all scheduled training sessions and meetings.
  • Upon employment, all employees are required to fully comply with company rules and regulations for the safe and effective operation of the Resort’s facilities. Employees who violate Resort rules and regulations will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
SUPPORTIVE FUNCTIONS
This position may be required to perform a combination of the following supportive functions, with the percentage of time performing each function determined by the manager based upon the particular requirements of the Resort:
  • Provide direct service to guests as needed, including, but not limited to, the job description described above.
  • Execute the essential duties of a Sommelier for guests or clients of any department on the resort as deemed necessary to provide expected levels of service.
  • Additional duties as necessary and assigned.
SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES T
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Must be able to speak, read, write and understand the primary language(s) used in the workplace.
  • Must be able to read and write to facilitate the communication process.
  • Requires good verbal and written communication skills
  • Possesses basic computational ability.
  • Must possess basic computer skills.
  • General understanding of computer or web-based shipping systems. i.e. UPS, FedEx, etc.
  • Ability to work independently when necessary.
  • Ability to solve problems and make rational decisions.
  • Adherence to resort loading dock policies.
  • Knowledge of basic shipping and receiving procedures.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to walk and stand for at least 5-6 hours. Some walking up and down stairs, and far locations from one end of the building to the other.
  • Must have the ability to bend, squat and frequently lift up to 30 lbs., and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to distinguish product quality, taste, texture, presentation; observing preparations to ensure quality standards.
  • Must be able to exert well-paced ability to maneuver between functions occurring simultaneously.
  • Must be able to push and pull carts and equipment weighing up to 250 lbs. occasionally.
  • Requires grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening and hearing ability and visual acuity.
  • Hearing and visual ability to observe and detect signs of emergency situations.
  • Talking and hearing occur continuously in the process of communicating with guests, supervisors, and subordinates.
  • Vision occurs continuously with the most common visual functions being those of near vision and depth perception.
  • Requires manual dexterity to use and operate all necessary equipment.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

Due to the cyclical nature of the hospitality industry, employees may be required to work varying schedules to reflect the business needs of the hotel. Also, attendance at all scheduled/mandatory training sessions and meetings is required.

Education:

High school or equivalent education required. Bachelor's Degree preferred.

Experience:

Previous hotel experience preferred. Food & Beverage and Supervisory experience required. Previous bartending experience preferred.
Licenses or Certificates:
Ability to obtain and maintain any government required licenses, certificates or permits. Preferably, the candidate possesses a certificate of completion from the Guild of Sommeliers.

Grooming:

All Associates must maintain a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance per Montage Hotel & Resorts standards. A conservative, simple and elegant style is preferred.
